Seal - Kiss from a Rose - Lyrics Meaning

Award-winning singer/songwriter (and husband of supermodel Heidi Klum), Seal released this song in 1994 on his second album, "Seal," (also known as "Seal II" since his first album had the same title). It wasn't until the song was included on the "Batman Forever" movie soundtrack in 1995 that it realized its full potential, when it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it stayed for ten weeks straight.

In 1996, Seal brought home three Grammys for "Kiss from a Rose" - for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. He called the album "a manifestation of lots of personal battles with myself, with my health, state of mind and coming to terms with the things happening around me."

Baby,

I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey.

The more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah

And now that your rose is in bloom

A light hits the gloom on the grey.

Some say that this song is one of the greatest love songs of all time. Others believe his clever use of metaphors relate to cocaine use - for example, "when it snows, my eyes become large" and "you became the light on the dark side of me."
