I don't think those are films that this flick tries to be in company of. I think of it more as falling in with movies like Deadbeat at Dawn, the Toxic Avenger series or Poultrygeist. Non-professional, cheap movies that never gained mainstream appreciation and that were very violent, often excessively so, particularly in the case of Toxic Avenger and Poultrygeist which feature a similar sort of violence as Hobo With a Shotgun.

Like the Hobo, Toxie from the Toxic Avenger is a cleaner-up of bad guys in Hell town (or Tromaville). The bad guys in the movies generally like to torture and kill the innocent. In the clip above, our hero Toxie starts killing the innocent and even picks up a young girl and throws her into a wall towards the end of the clip. These movies were basically made to be as "incorrect" and offensive as possible. Even though they are super silly and the effects are awful, they typically are a little hard to watch, if only because committing something like that to film seems like human corruption on a larger scale. It makes you laugh at things you perhaps shouldn't laugh at.

When I saw Hobo, I knew that it was likely to feature over the top offensive stuff like the murder of children because the movies it pays tribute to and tries to be like generally do. I went into it mentally and emotionally prepared for all that. If you don't know what you're gonna get, I think it makes the movie a lot worse. However, I still think that it was well written enough to make it much more than just an exploration of depravity. It does feature some morale and Rutger as the hobo was impressive, I thought.

I would not want to watch A Serbian Film because that is something I consider to be only an exploration of depravity.

bah! humbug!
I wouldn't suggest that film to anyone, I saw it knowing that it was going to be as grotesque as it was, but I suspected that there was going to be something else to it. Nope, just raping newborns, killing men by a cock to the eye socket, etc.

Nick ****ing Cave.

I thought this was a pretty good western. I didn't really get too involved with the Winstone character or his wife but I loved all the scenes with the outlaw brothers and John Hurt. The soundtrack was also fantastic as I expected Nick Cave and Warren Ellis to be. Cave also wrote the screenplay which was a major surprise to me. I liked it a lot.

I like this movie a lot, but there definitely is something missing and some of it is pretty average. Still, it more than succeeds at being a thriller and at making its point clear.

man, all this talk about A Serbian Film makes me wanna see it. Maybe it is just that I have a love for things on the extreme side of art, music, movies and such that draws me more towards that type of thing. The talk here is the type of advertising that makes me go, i gotta see what this film is all about now.

"I would not want to watch A Serbian Film because that is something I consider to be only an exploration of depravity"

This is a tag line that draws me in.

That's the same mistake that I made, one that I wouldn't wish upon thee. I think that Tim Anderson put it best when he said "You don't want to see Serbian Film. You just think you do." If you want a better film of depravity watch Salo or 120 Days of Sodom, it's a better film overall and more well made.

^^Salo was pretty mild for me, what with the availability of scat porn and torture porn these days

yes, it's technically good and even the subtext is intelligent but man, is it boring or what?

I thought that it was a film that proffered an interesting viewpoint that was naught of my own. I liked it for the manner in which it was shot and how it was presented in terms of plot. The overall quality and style of the filmmaking made me enjoy the film. But that is the "technical good" that you saw as "boring.". It was quite mild in content/context but pornography has provided several outlets, hence the desentisization.
