Prometheus sucked. Sci-Fi flicks don't have to be well-written or executed any more... just include some awesome visual effects and you're golden (and by golden, I mean rolling in dough thanks to suckers like me). Also-- don't believe the "Alien" hype. This has nearly nothing to do with the Alien franchise and the tie-ins were clearly thrown in post-production, since you know, they didn't want it to be a prequel but then they did.... gah

And the worst part: shoehorned, cheesy dialogue on bull**** philosophy about religion and human origins. yuck

Ju-On: The Grudge

So I was mistaken when I thought I bought the movie that inspired the American remake, or at least I was sort of mistaken. This is actually the third movie in the Japanese series and not entirely the source material used in the 2004 remake. I have to say I was a little disappointed with it, it had some okay atmosphere, but compared to the 2001 film Pulse it's about as subtle as a clown with his cock out. The pacing is all over the place, but it really didn't have that intense staring contest I like about J-horror, and the story became really hard to follow because of the time and perspective jumping. This wasn't helped by the fact that my friend and I were drinking and smoking pot, but we did have to pause the film on two occasions to try and sort out the plot, even going so far as to try and make a flowchart on a white board. So yeah... this may actually be one of those occasions where the Americanized version is better, at least for this series... and maybe The Ring.

We like to make sense of our movies, and this film is one that really doesn't concern itself with pacing. I mean there's this scene where these two detectives are killed by the ghost and then the next thing we know it's the future and we're following the daughter of one of the first detective to investigate the disturbances around the house. Then after that we're back to the very first character we meet who I could have sworn was already killed. Making sense of this movie is challenging enough sober, throw marijuana and alcohol into the equation and a flow chart becomes a necessity.

Anyways this was on Netflix last night so I just had to watch.

Death Race 2000 (1975)

Yeah the 1970's are pretty uh... weird when it comes to some movies, this is no exception. I was already well aware of many of the scenes and the generally story just from listening to other people talk about it so it wasn't really all that new to me, but it was at least fun to finally check this off my movie list. Couple of questions though, when Machine Gun Joe fires his Tommy Gun into the crowd of Frankenstein supporters, was he firing blanks or were they real bullets? Other question, did anyone else think it was kind of... backwards that in an attempt to make the world safe again and bring back democracy, Frankenstein kills the President and then becomes president himself? Seems a little bit more like a dictatorship to me, a la the Roman Empire.

My comment wasn't saying that only someone who was high would have to use a flowchart to understand a movie, but that only someone who was high would actually make a flow chart to understand a movie. Of course, maybe film geeks just do stuff like that. *shrugs*

Was thinking of picking Death Race 2000 up. Been collecting some of the movies in the Roger Corman Cult Collections series. Probably get around to picking this up soon.

Fantastic documentary on gang violence and the few in Chicago trying to stop it. It was emotional and frustrating and of course very well done. Give it a watch if you like documentaries.

Dirty Harry (1971)

Finally got around to filling this particular gap in my viewing spectrum. Overall I liked it, mostly because I finally got to see where all the cop movie archetypes from other movies came from, and well... Harry Callahan is just a badass.
