I just got back from the theater. I'm disappointed. Before I explain why let me tell you what I liked and loved about the film.
  • Anderson is still a visionary and will continue to do so until he goes insane and drives a bus full of children off a bridge, which after seeing this movie, is entirely possible. More ahead on that...
  • The film is brilliantly acted. Oh my god. Joaquin Phoenix is going to win his first Oscar with this performance. Every time he was on the screen it was mesmerizing. I haven't see an actor completely transform like that since, well, Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood. Phoenix's face alone could win best supporting oscar because of all the little movements and quips that portrayed what was going on in his characters unstable head. It was truly a brilliant performance. Hopefully it doesn't go unnoticed like Michael Shannon's performance in Take Shelter did last year. The two are similar. Phillip Seymour Hoffman should also get an Oscar nomination for his just powerfully solid acting. Phoenix stole the show, but Hoffman was his usual amazing self. These two are going to rack up awards this year and they have earned it.
  • The score and cinematography were both couple into a beautiful blend of wonder in this thing. I read that Anderson filmed the entire thing in Panasonic 65 mm which is a first since 1992's Hamlet. You could tell. Each shot was gorgeous and you still had PT's signature tracking and long takes. It was a very nice watch. I wish I saw it on a bigger screen.

Those reasons alone are enough to go see this movie. Please, go see it, but be aware...

PT Anderson is ****ing insane.

This film was very disjointed. It reminded me a lot of watching The Tree of Life. It was beautiful and well acted but I had no idea of what the hell was going on or that there was even a story being told. Anderson's previous films have had plot. They had a resolution and they had purpose. This one didn't Without spoiling anything there was a lot of scenes that just were completely unnecessary to the film. It was like Anderson was trying to push some envelope when he just didn't need too. He's PT Anderson. It was like he watched that scene in The Shining of the people in animal costumes blowing each other and said "I want to do THAT about eight times in my new film". I kept saying to myself "Why did that happen? Maybe they'll explain lat...oh **** the movie is over". Usually I like these kind of movies but it was just off for me.

I think I need to see this movie again. I wanted to love it so bad but ended up just being fixated on the aesthetic aspects such as the camera work and acting. PT Anderson is so much more than that and I feel like I'm going to be itching for another film in the next year so that I get my fix. I'm not even going to rate this one. I just can't. It's a film that needs to be seen but also a film that could gave been just so amazing but ends up falling short.

Not just directly but indirectly. He uses a carrot as a finger to press the trigger on a gun. Brilliant. And you musn't forget the shoot out/sex scene. Oscar worthy.

The music monologues are priceless and confirmed what I already thought about certain bands although I never saw Alice Cooper's music in that light. I have to rethink my opinion!
Not a great film IMO but a great bit of social commentary. I could connect with all of it, even as a young adult. I loved that he rips Diablo Cody and the Juno film. I thought scathing american idol being the central story arc was kinda redundant but otherwise very thought-provoking.

Spoiler for ":
shooting the baby was pretty awesome too

Shoot em up is brilliant.... i hate ponytails! If anyone watches and takes it seriously then I weep for humanity.

Space Cowboys (US 2000). An interesting aspect of Clint Eastwood's career is that he was the last of his contemporaries to make the transition from TV star to film star. James Garner, Steve McQueen and some others I've forgotten were among them. So, at last here is Eastwood and Garner in the same film. Perhaps McQueen would've joined them in Space Cowboys, if he had lived. The funny thing is that, despite being one of the most charismatic American actors, James Garner plays an uncharacteristically muted role, but perhaps this is due to his age. It is also curious that Eastwood should appear in a sc-fi film at a time when the genre was unfashionalbe, although there are plot similarities with Armageddon (US 1998). Parts of Space Cowboys are very predictable, but the end is stll exciting, even if you have seen the film before. Overall, by contrast with many films of the last twenty years or so and because of the cast, Space Cowboys is also enjoyable.

Princess Mononoke (1997)

Holy shit what have I been sleeping on for so long? This is seriously one of the best movies I have seen in a long time, and a friend just gave it to me too.

I loved the simple story and how Ashitaka is just such a likeable protagonist despite feeling kind of corny at times. The rest of the characters were really well rounded, even the bit part characters that only have a few lines. The music was phenomenal and fit the movie perfectly and those visuals... Goddamn! I hope you like LOTS of color, because this film is full of them.

The voice acting is really well done as well if you get a dubbed version like me. With Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Billy Bob Thorton, Jada Pinkett Smith, Keith David, Gillian Anderson, and John DiMaggio this film is packed with talent and just works in English.

If you like animated films and fantasy, this really is the film for you.

May contain some general spoilers, but I'll keep it as broad as possible

Interesting concept but I felt the execution left a lot to be desired. Personally, I felt there were a few too many plot holes, along with crazy "rules" and plot devices they had to throw in to make the story work, and it was just too much to overlook. It is a movie based on time travel, so I guess that's to be expected though.

The acting was fine other than the mini-Rainmaker. I feel bad about calling out a little kid for his acting abilities, but it was the writing of his character that contributed to it just as much as his acting chops. Can you get a more cliche character? C'mon. JGL was good though, as were the others; seeing a bit more of Paul Dano and Jeff Daniels would have been nice though.

Overall, it was pretty entertaining though. Good action and some pretty memorable scenes, even if a lot were put in purely for effect and ignored logic (such as the Paul Dano torture scene).

7/10

Believe it or not, but this was my first viewing of Rosemary's Baby. I've always been a fan of Polanski but this one just slipped through the cracks for many years. Two things stood out on my first viewing, the direction and Mia Farrow. Polanski had more single take shots than I could count and it was a beauty to watch. The scene in the phone booth was just perfect. Farrow also had a great performance. I really can't see any of the other actresses who were supposed to play Rosemary in the role. Farrow was perfect. The ending was a bit disappointing but I know it was extremely faithful to the book so I can't complain. Overall a very good movie.

8/10

Demian Bichir's performance was just slightly better than Clooney's performance in The Descendants. Bichir is the sole driving force of this movie. Not to say that the film isn't good. It is, just nothing we haven't seen before. I haven't gotten choked up in a while but I really did when Bichir talked to his song at the end of the film. He honestly deserved the Oscar.

6/10 film but 10/10 performance from Bichir

The Last Seven - 2010
Tamer Hassan / Simon Phillips / Danny Dyer

First of all, I'm a fan of The Business & Dead Man Running which both star Hassan & Dyer, but their other movies are well below par and this one falls into that category.

The story is a cross between 28 Days Later and The Langoliers with some strange religious nonsense thrown in.

It's not as bad as some Dyer / Hassen outings, I did watch it all the way through but was left feeling disappointed overall.

Overall 4/10

My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

Alright this was just a fun little film and really does work as an all ages kind of thing. Should some mad woman ever break into my house, steal my waste paper basket and impregnate herself with some dirty tissues, I'll be sure this movie is a part of my wayward cumsprout's life.
