Bite the Bullet (1975)

Underrated character-driven western from James Brooks starring Gene Hackman, James Coburn, Candice Bergen, Jan-Michael Vincent and two excellent performances from character actors Ian Bannen and Ben Johnson. Story is centered on the entrants in a 700 mile horse race in 1906. Not a lot of action but there's plenty of great performances (especially Ben Johnson) and some gorgeous cinematography.

Brilliant. Nazi's living on the dark side of the moon decide to invade the earth. Roll your eyes all you like. This is a satire of the highest order and it looks incredible considering it's sub 10 mill budget not to mention it's a Finnish film!

REMEMBER IT'S A SATIRE AND NOT A SERIOUS FILM!

That trailer is bad. It makes it seem like this film is a quirky romantic comedy when in reality it’s a quirky look on how hipsters live in New York City. Seriously, next time you’re in a Starbucks in NYC and there are a bunch of 27 year olds with fedoras, really long tank tops, and Buddy Holly glasses on, just listen to what they’re talking about. If they’re talking about movies, they’ll be talking about this. And you know what? I didn’t dislike the movie. I thought it was a modern day Woody Allen classic that isn’t going to turn into a classic. It’s official, Greta Gerwig is the new indie queen. I’m calling it right now. She’s going to be in every little indie movie from now until she fades away. She was actually pretty great in this. At least she can act. The film was directed by Noah Baumbach and succeeded in getting me not to hate it. I hated his first two films. Greenberg was just flat out annoying but it had a lot to do with Ben Stiller’s infuriating character that he does which I call “whiney jewish guy”. The Squid and the Whale was just awkward. I mean there’s a scene where a ten year old smears semen on a bookshelf in school. Strange ****. No thank you. I saw the film at the IFC Center in New York City with three other 50 year old dudes. One left in the middle, one had headphones in blasting Italian opera the whole time, and one was actually watching the movie. It was a weird little experience but the IFC Center was awesome so I can’t complain. By all means if you like Woody Allen which I do then check out this film sometime. Baumbach even filmed it in black and white. Totally old school.

A one trick pony - think Phone Booth or Panic Room in that a single concept can drive a whole movie but it was well thought out, looked great and kept my attention throughout.

If you don't know the premise a NY bike messenger has to deliver a package to the other side of town whilst being chased by a bent cop who also wants the contents.

Absolutely predictable from start to finish but who cares really? I wanted to be diverted and have fun and the scene with the gorilla in TGI Fridays was worth the 90 min haul.

It's actually a pile of **** but I decided to turn my brain off whilst watching so it did it's job.

Ridiculously brilliant. If you liked In Bruges this is from the same team. Subversive, ridiculous, humorous and full of the same jet black comedy shot through with amazing pathos. Excellent stuff if you like indie movies.

I really liked The Guard. I ended up catching that movie on a whim one day channel surfing.

Also, I have seen Premium Rush way too many times. I think I saw it three times when it was in the theaters. It's not that good but I saw it once by myself and the other two times with other people.
