Yes but I think the title card states that the fire happened in 1987 and then it says 1988 right before the action starts, to tell us that the guys are working to repair the ruined road. Btw, it's in Bastrop, Texas which was actually devastated by a wildfire in 2011

It would still make sense though. If they were ghosts and forveer working on the road then they could go on working on it through the 90s and so forth.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

keeping with what seems to be a tradition...i took my nephews to see this yesterday and......

ok...let me first say that i read the book a year ago before the first flick came out and this film is waaaaaaaay off from the book...more so than the first one was

that being said

this is actually a good thing....although the film dragged a few times and honestly felt like it was 4 hours and 40 versus 2 hours for me there is only one reason to see this movie

THERE IS A FUCKING TALKING DRAGON IN IT!!!!!!


and he is in it for a solid 40+ minutes and he is incredible!

Yeah, the dragon was amazing. And I actually liked the filler much better than the first movie.

The stuff they added to the first movie might have actually happened in the "real" LOTR timeline, but all the council and Dol Guldur stuff just cut the movie in half and ruined any of the momentum built up in the first half. When they finally came back to Bilbo and the dwarves as they were leaving Rivendell I was kinda like, "Oh yeah, these guys are here too. What's happening with these guys? Wasn't there a dragon or something involved?"

The added on stuff from the new movie, whatever you want to say about it, was at least integrated into the movie in a much less awkward way. And I'm sure I'm taking my reputation into my hands by saying this, but I'm a shameless, cheesy **** and I thought the tacked on romance with the elf and the dwarf was kind of charming. It helped that she was dumb fine.

sorry i may have come off a little snide....i actually loved the film....and all of the added stuff....sure it dragged a bit...but so what....it had 40 minutes of Smaug just fucking shit up!

the elves are simply bad asses (that river scene was just....well awesome! )....the necromancer side story is very interesting....and the woman who plays (Evangeline Lilly) Tauriel is absolutely stunning

but as expected Smaug stole the show.....he just looked so amazing

I didn't think you were being snide. I probably would have loved the movie too, except I was stuck behind a bunch of teenagers, one of whom apparently thought she was so hilarious that I'd rather listen to her make bad jokes than the actual movie. She pretty much ruined the last fourth of the movie for me. Seriously the only people worse than people who talk in movies are people who make computer viruses. Hang them all I say.

i'm telling you man.....tuesday afternoon is the best time to see a movie

there was maybe 20 people in there.....and me and my three nephews were the only ones not wearing LOTR shirts

and i agree...people who talk during movies should be shot....not in the head or anything....but in the arm or leg

I was actually there on a Sunday afternoon with almost nobody else in the theater. Which is probably why they wanted to talk so much I guess. On the plus side I got to be the guy who told them to shut up. I've always wanted to be that guy, but never thought it would be me. I felt like a vigilante.
