How is Drive deep / pretends to be?

It's a very simple movie.

The action scenes are incredible.

The thing with Drive is it's all atmosphere - not depth. LOVE that movie and the way is mixes soft and loud, sweet and evil, good people and bad people.

And ya, the action scenes are amazing. The opening scene alone is brilliant.

Also love the nod to Irreversable with the elevator scene.

I have a strong dislike for anything made by Refn and that includes Drive. He somehow manages to make empty schlock movies that come off as being unbearably pretentious and are tedious to get through as well. I almost never feel like a movie is pretentious, but Refn just has a style that annoys me to the maximum extent. Valhalla Rising must have been one of my most unbearable movie viewing experiences ever.

Not a fan.

Plus everyone in Drive acted in that emotionally deadened, muted way which totally kills any sense of believeability in the characters. That scene where Carey Mulligan witnesses a horrific act in the elevator, and then just walks out like it wasn't anything... I wanna say that's one of the worst acted scenes in film history, but I know that would be an exaggeration. But it was bad, and it was illustrative of a huge problem I have with this useless specimen of a director.

Probably the most overrated movie of the last 20 years.

She didn't just "walk out like it wasn't anything". That scene (as brutal as it was) was essential. The kiss they shared once the driver knew what was about to happen, and the way the director changed the lighting and speed was brilliant. She didn't know she'd fallen in love with a complete psychopath. A psychopath who would do anything to protect her and her boy (and even her son's dad earlier in the film).

The key to that scene is after Mulligan exits the elavator in shock, the Driver turns with blood and murder lust starting to drain away, and he realizes he's lost her (and her son) forever. The look on his face says it all.

On a side note, I just made the connection between Drive and Ex-Machina tonight. I'm getting so freaking slow.

I get Gosling's acting in this scene, but her's is less "OMG that is horrible what kind of monster is he?!" and more "hmm... what kind of milk should I get. Did I have half a carton left? I can't remember".
