he's done some okay films like southpaw and everest but in terms of good films i can't think of many actors with a better track record post 2000.

- Enemy
- Prisonners
- Nocturnal Animals
- Nightcrawler
- Brokeback Mountain
- Zodiac
- Source Code
- End of Watch
- Demolition
- Jarhead
- Donnie Darko

and i'm sure i'm missing some

he's just the real ****in' deal man
Haven't seen all of those yet, but I loved these: Nightcrawler (best modern thriller, pretty much), Jarhead and Zodiac. Need to catch up to some of those. Especially Demolition and Prisoners.

oh my god dude. you need to see Prisoners ASAP. it's probably Denis Villeneuve's bench mark film at this point. there's not many better examples of how to take a fairly "basic" narrative and elevate to such a level that it becomes a near perfect film. it's one of those films that will stick with you days after seeing it. cannot recommend enough. it edges out Nightcrawler and Nocturnal Animals for me by a little bit.

The thing is, I'm not too big a Villeneuve fan... (I know, I know - call me a philistine), but I still want to see it because I think Gyllenhaal is great, and because I think it sounds like an interesting movie. I've seen both Incendies, Sicario and Blade Runner 2049 (all Denis Villeneuve films), but didn't really connect with either... It is what it is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

huh. interesting. i haven't seen Blade Runner yet but I love Incendies and Sicario. Prisoners is better than both though and I have a feeling it might win you over to his style a bit.

Hopefully so. I'm just not really on his mental wavelength, it seems. Which is not to say that some of his individual scenes didn't get under my skin. That scene in Incendies where the bus is stopped by these muslim soldiers and they decide to set fire to it... That's the kind of scene that stays with you for years...

Re: Shannon

His bit parts in "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead" puts him in DeNiro status.

This is my favorite film this year. Until Paul Thomas Anderson releases The Phantom Thread. But goddamn I don't even know if that will top this. Lady Bird was great, but this is in a different class of film. If this doesn't win best picture, I'll lose any remaining hope in these shitty PC award ceremonies.

In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths are really great too (especially In Bruges) but this can't be topped. I love how the ending is pretty vague on what the outcome of anything is too. Goddamn I love this movie.

In Bruges........ ****, go into this without any preconception. Don't watch the trailer. Don't read any reviews.

Good lord, the acting by the three leads in this flick is utterly mind-blowing. Gleeson may be the best of the bunch. So sublime.

The playground scene.........
