Also finally choose to check out Zoolander 2 a few days ago.

No where near as good as the original but had a chuckle at times.

Of the oscar noms I've seen this year

Phantom Thread>3 Billboards>The Shape of Water>Get Out

Gerald's Game is still the best movie I've seen from 2017 though.

I'm not really bothering catching up on Oscar movies. There's not really any that seem like something I need to see, and my list of films I need to watch is long enough. For that matter, I think Cannes nominated movies are more worth going after. An Oscar nomination doesn't really signal any credibility to me.

So go watch Dunkirk. I say this because I think you might be surprised by how much it isn't a propaganda film compared to other war films. I think it's a pretty great showing of just how it is to be scared ****less of being in a war, though it clearly does have its corny war movie issues. War movies that don't have issues with corniness are rare if not nonexistent obviously.

Definitely far from all Cannes films will be good, but I've had amazingly good luck with buying movies with those Cannes palms on the cover. I don't even care if it's a winner or just a nominee. Even the movies I hated were still well made and somewhat interesting. The Oscars feature a lot more movies any given year that are just tepid, sentimental schlock.
But I guess following the Oscars will give you some sense of the current zeitgeist and there's bound to be a few good films somewhere among the nominees. I might watch The Shape of Water soon if my brother really wants to go and see it, but there's not a great amount of Oscar movies that I feel curious about. I guess that I tend to discover them a year or two later if they still get talked about by film geeks.

Yeah well, that hasn't gone unnoticed, but I still have to feel like it's igniting some spark of interest in my mind. There's not many that I feel very excited to check out. I've got an overwhelming amount of films noted on my computer - new and old - that I feel legitimately very curious about, so I doubt I'm going to bother catching up to many Oscar nominees any time in 2018.

Feel free to tell me which one's I really shouldn't miss.
