I think it's an issue with Del Tomo being a boring director that ought to be seen as the simple plebian he is. He's not a genius and his movies aren't interesting. He's just a fat nerd who likes monsters.
A fat nerd who likes monsters and has made several great movies.

I kinda liked Hellboy a little bit some years ago. Then I watched the sequel and thought it was ****. Went back and watched the first again and didn't like it anymore. Even less mileage with his other movies. Haven't seen Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim.

He's in the easily skippable directors category for me. With Von Trier, I at least suspect I might be missing something one day, even though I usually hate his movies. With Del Toro, I don't feel like there's any chance that I'll find any future movie of his amazing.

Don't worry, you're clearly missing Del Toro's excellent characters and world-building.

Maybe. He's just Peter Jackson 2.0 in my eyes.

Yes exactly. He's the upgraded version of Jackson.

He actually has some interesting ideas and a sense of the visual that Peter Jackson 1.0 was shipped without.

Welp, I don't know what to tell you. I think Pan's Labyrinth is one of the best movies of the 00s. The Devil's Backbone is also amazing, as are The Shape of Water and Hellboy II. Hellboy and Blade II are highly entertaining, if a little bit more normal. Mimic and Pacific Rim are ok. I've never seen Cronos or Crimson Peak.
