What's The Latest Film You Have Seen?

Watched Chicago yesterday. Realized afterwards it won the 2003 Oscar for best picture (among other wins). Say what?

I've disagreed with Oscar winner choices many times before, but this one has to be the most puzzling one yet to me. I don't think the movie is just overrated, I think it's unwatchable garbage. 2/10. The only reason it doesn't get a 1 is that I've seen some pretty horrifically ****ty B-movies over the years.

One of the ****tiest big budget movies I've ever seen. I fast forwarded several times because the musical numbers and generally useless acting, plot and cinematography made me gag.

They could have given that Oscar to Catch Me If You Can or something. At least that wouldn't have made it seem like the voters are a bunch of meth addled chimpanzees.

A similar, better movie: Nine. Not great, but quite watchable, which makes it a huge improvement over Chicago. EDIT: Holy crap! It's the same damn director! Rob Marshall almost learned how to make a movie in the 7 years between Chicago and Nine. But he really just went from being useless to being somewhat halfway competent.

Also watched Beetlejuice. Gotta say I don't understand quite why people love this movie so much. At least with Edward Scissorhands, I can see how it's charming and has an engaging story - even if I didn't really like the movie that much. Beetlejuice had some fun moments and memorable scenes, but I really think it falls apart gradually as it goes along, and I found it quite disappointing how little it managed to do with it's elaborate ideas about the afterlife. I think Burton has always been hit and miss. This belongs to the worse half of his filmography, even if it at least had its moments. But I don't think Burton has made a movie that was complete garbage yet, except maybe Dark Shadows.

A similar, better movie: The Adams Family. Fun, cohesive and way more atmospheric and way less ugly and garish. Not to mention most characters in that movie are charming and fun, rather than annoying.

Brah, if you're confused why people like the things they do then just know that in the context of movies "falls apart gradually" has no meaning to 99% of the human race.

Saw “A Star is Born”. Everyone here should check it out. I really think Bradley Cooper has a reasonable chance at winning both Best Director and Best Actor, which has never happened before

Lady Gaga is excellent as well, and for the first time ever I actually found her really attractive in the movie so that’s a plus. She looks nice with long brown hair

Sam Elliott kills it as usual. The man gets little screen time but dominates every scene he gets. He could get a best supporting actor nom.

The hype is real on that one guys, and the music isn’t terrible either. Highly recommended, and my 2nd favorite film of 2018 after Hereditary.

Cooper can actually sing pretty well too:

I always thought Lady Gaga was attractive under the silly costumes. Just check out the Perfect Illusion music video and it's obvious.

Anyway, I don't know how many know the Jim Henson movie Dark Crystal. I just finished watching it and it was disappointing. Even sort of crap. Which is a letdown for someone who really loves Labyrinth.
Definitely the most pointless and generic fantasty nonsense plot in all of movie history, plus a completely unappealing blank slate of a main character. Fantasy is the most cursed movie genre of all time. Something 99 out of a 100 movies in the genre are turds.

I like Labyrinth, Snow White and the Huntsman (the sequel was crap, sadly), Maleficent, Legend and... maybe one or two more?

Next up on my shelf:

Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Destroyer
Red Sonja

Expecting at least 1 of those to be crap. I know the first Conan movie is cool, so I'm looking forward to rewatching that one.

Haven't seen it since I was a kid and now I kinda want to see if it was actually any good. Apparently Slayer took their name from the movie fyi.

I know I've actually watched the movie years ago, but I can't remember much. I sadly don't think I was impressed. Maybe it's worth watching one more time, I don't know. Could be.
