Yeah, Being Human was a decent film but it had so much wasted potential.

And a big reason is because of the pacing, it always moved forward to the next segment before you could really start to connect with any of the characters.

I used to hate Jim Carey too, just a goofy idiot. But The Truman Show made me like him more, and I do prefer him in more serious roles.

A great movie by Kubrick, I was surprised how good the book was adapted. I've already read the book, after being obsessed with Adrian Lyne's version, and I noticed then, that Lyne didn't seem like he understood it. The events of the book were there, but not the characters' personality, nor the subtlety of the relation between Hum and Lolita.

Watching this Lolita, and knowing that Nabokov himself was the one to adapt it to the screen, I thought the movie would be a bit similar to the book. I was hugely mistaking, it was a very different version. Even the past of H.H was erased from the movie, not even the mentioning of the little nymphet he was in love with in his youngest years. But it was all for the best. If I wanted the book, I would've only read the book. So that was different, and it was great.

I still have never seen any version of Lolita and I guess it's because I have a real problem with Kubricks emotional detachment in many of his films and Lyne's version is supposed to be terrible. I still want to watch Barry Lyndon though.

I didn't feel Kubrick's style in the movie. It was different from everything else I watched. Tho the great work in this version is in the co-written screenplay, by both Kubrick and Nabokov, the directing was good to elevate this point.

^^ Again, I feel a bit silly restating my opinion given that it's been at least a decade since I've seen the Lyne version, but I do remember thinking the exact opposite, that not only was Lolita better cast, but also Irons was great in the role (Mason was great too I have to say), but Langella was clearly a better (sleazier) choice, in my opinion, than Peter Sellers who, at least to my mind, completely inappropriately imbued the film with a comedic tone. And Lyne's film seemed to be much more sensual and poetic if my memory doesn't deceive me. And also, I do recall much more mystery in the latter version, just like the book if I'm not mistaken (I have the memory of a goldfish so excuse the excuses) unlike the Kubrick one which makes it very clear what's going to happen and by whom. In any case, I've downloaded it and will watch it soon, hope I'm not completely mistaken.



Wow. I only downloaded this because it seemed to have a rather large cult following (and was a golden torrent on a private tracker) but was rather apprehensive going in, thinking it was a weird, 70s, LSD inspired B-film extravaganza. Especially when you know it involves Christopher Lee and deals with pagan rituals AND is essentially part musical. BUT wow, what a pleasant surprise. Not only is it NOT a B-film (the acting is all A-list) but it's a very intelligent and very well directed mystery-thriller with just a slight dash of horror. And the music is actually very pleasing and doesn't distract from the experience at all, on the contrary. Apparently what I saw was a very shortened, "butchered" version (at least according to the extras) but I thought it was perfect the way it was (I imagine the original version did drag on a bit). For anyone who has heard of it and had the same misgivings as I did, hurry up and see it, it really is a great film.

Have no idea what they did in the remake but I have no intention of watching it (absolutely cannot stand Cage).

I've read the book, and I can tell you, the only things that directly got stuck in my mind were Quilty's funny replies. I even had one of the replies as signature in other forums (and still have it actually). Erasing the comedy, in a book meant to have some kind of Dark Humor, can never be a good choice. Plus, in this version, the sex scenes are hinted only (due to the censorship in the 60s) opposite to Lyne's.

Anyway, I sound like a fanboy now, tho Lyne's movie has always been one of my favorites. So I'm gonna stop now.

Just watched this. It's probably one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen, can't really decide if I liked it or not. It's characters are some of the strangest ever.
