Woah! Funny you guys mention this movie, because I literally just finished watching it about half an hour ago. You guys don't seem to like it...I enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty intense, and I really like Ellen Page as an actor.

I saw Pandorum yesterday. Nothing mindblowing, but it was good! It's a horror/thriller/action film that takes place on a gigantic spaceship. It looks good, has hostile creatures and insanity in it and that kind of shock scenes that are so efficient at terrifying girlfriends. It also has a little bit of cheese and a stereotypical character or two, but that's pretty much what one should expect from this sort of film.

Recommended to those who liked Event Horizon!

Very tense all psychological build-up through the film. I'll re-watch it in these few days, cause I missed the beginning.
That Rory Caulkin has some pretty intense movies.

^ One of my favourite books, and this adaptation didn't disappoint in the slightest. Although the whole love triangle thing between the main characters played a more central role than in the book and therefore grated a little, that's basically what to expect from a mainstream cinema adaptation, and the fact that the rest of the film stayed very faithful to the book made up for it. Brendan Fraser and Michael Caine were fantastic in the lead roles too.

two I have enjoyed on late-night TV lately

the Entertainer (1960)
I've shamefully seen hardly any films with Laurence Olivier (ostensibly one of the greatest film actors of the last century), but this and Richard III alone justify these claims in my eyes. This is a Tony Richardson-directed adaptation of a John Osborne play, and if you recognise those names you will know what you are getting - 'kitchen sink' drama/social realism and lots of good dialogue. It only fails towards the end where it really feels a bit stagey, the misfortunes heaped upon the main character pile up and some slightly cringeworthy speeches are made. Otherwise definitely worth a watch if you like the era. (The girl on the right of the screencap was in the definitive k-sink drama 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning', which is more essential IMO)

the Cell (2000)
Tarsem Singh would later go on to direct the Fall, which I haven't seen but remember Marijan trumpeting on here a while back, and after viddying the Cell for the first time in a good 7 years I am intrigued by this guy's style. Cell is essentially a beautifully designed thriller/sci-fi/horror in the Se7en mold. Jenny Lopez (back before she had dedicated her acting career exclusively to sickly romcoms) is only semi-believable as a hot Latina psychiatrist who has to use a magical gizmo that is never really explained to dive into the subconscious of a comatose serial killer in order to find out where he is stashing his last victim for whom time is rapidly running out *deep breath*. Sounds 'meh'? The OTT gore and acts of sado-masochism feel very late 90s to me and for some reason made me nostalgic for what was an utterly rubbish time... but it's good fun and combined with the amazing set/costume design and dreamlike quality to the 'mindmeld' scenes made for a diverting couple of hours. The pic above depicts my favourite un-nerving bit and one of the only really genuinely surreal moments. DIG?!!

I've actually always though this was a pretty good movie, and I agree that it has some great costume and set design. I wasn't disappointed with it when I first saw it, but haven't given it a view in a long time. I do remember thinking that Vincent D'Onofrio did a great job playing sick and twisted.

yeah he WAS good. Outside that the fillum (irish pronounciation) feels a bit slapdash with the events taking place in the 'real word' (as mentioned, very Se7en-ish?) ... and i am not great fan of J-Lo's acting, but she tries bless 'er...

^ Really enjoyable film about the formation and struggles of a white soul band from Dublin. Besides being really well-written, the soundtrack is immense as well, and probably rivals the Blues Brothers when it comes to the strength of the performances (the version of Mustang Sally here's probably the best I've ever heard as well).
