Fun, in a twisted b-movie kind of way. Cronenberg's usually pretty bankable, although Videodrome is better as far as early, pre-The Fly work.

I thought Scanners was kind of, well, interesting idea with a somewhat boring execution. It's okay, but not something I'd recommend to anyone. At least I thought it was forgettable. As you seem to agree, Videodrome is more attractive in terms of entertainment value and pure bizarreness.

Scanners is a good movie but it's mostly memorable for the opening scene and the climax, they both feature some truly awesome use of gory special effects (as you'd expect from Cronenberg) though there's not a whole lot more going on in between these scenes, still worth checking out if you're a Cronenberg fan, which I am.

I've only seen Scanners, Videodrome, The Dead Zone, The Fly and A History of Violence. They were all okay, but nothing I got really excited about. I think his 80s flicks that I've seen have rather interesting stories, but are lacking somewhat when it comes to pure entertainment value. With the exception of Videodrome, they're not films I want to watch again.

However, maybe I've been unfortunate and watched his more mediocre films? Would you recommend any of those I haven't seen?

I'd definitely recommend checking out Dead Ringers. That's a really, really good one by him. Although I love The Fly too, so if you didn't like that there a chance you might just not like Cronenberg's style.

It's not that I don't like it, I just don't find it brilliant. Thanks for the suggested title! It looks interesting and I'm definetly gonna check it out.

I think Naked Gun is probably my favourite comedy ever. At least there's no other movie in that particular genre/style with the same level of quality, I think. Leslie Nielsen is brilliant in it, for example when he's just realized that the car he opened fire on until it crashed and burned was his own or when he tries to look in the microscope using the wrong eye.

I liked The Dead Zone but it's one of his more tame and reserved movies.

If you want to see Cronenberg at his absolute weirdest then Naked Lunch is the one to see.

The Fly is awesome, easily one of my all time favorite horror films. Overall Cronenberg is very high on the tier of horror/thriller directors for me. I hope he gets back to straight up horror stuff someday because that genre is in desperate need of something interesting right now.

That shootout at the beginning is comedy gold too

Although I think Hot Shots and Airplane give Naked Gun a real run for its money for this kind of humour, you're right how it's probably the best of its kind too.
