Well it is making fun of those clichés. The main story isn't about not fitting in, as she fitted in more than fine. Neither it is about her liking the boy, as it's not a Romantic comedy. It's just a good comedy, that beats all these shitty teenage RomComs.

It's not about fitting in? Even though early in the film she ate her food on her lap in the toilet? It was about that and then finding her way into a social group at first with 'the freaks' and then with 'the plastics'

I always thought it was a fun chick flick, I never realised men actually rated the writing of it. Although the critics seemed to like it but meh, fun light hearted film that doesn't take itself too seriously. If thinimajig died when the bus hit her, that would've made the film SO much better. What a brilliant end..

It's kind of about the segregation in high schools, as she was friends with the couple of freaks, but felt the need to get into higher ranks.
Now, about killing the girl off: Even if that would seem like "ending with a boom", it's actually just the easy way out, something we call "Deus ex machina". Plus, it wouldn't solve anything.

Yeah yeah I got all of that.. kind of a true social statement when you think about it, but it's Mean Girls.

I just think it would've been hilarious, more an ending for a dark comedy. Her dying and then a scene where everyone's friends and happy

Much better then a neck brace.. I'm yet to see a dark comedy or any film end with someone getting run over, other than Skins series 1.

(if you're American you might not know what Skins is. But meh)

I think it'd be a total shift of the film, quite a light hearted happy affair then suddenly BAM. Hit by a bus.
