For Your Consideration, from Christoper Guest and friends. It was a laugh, not exactly Spinal Tap but another successful doc-style comedy I think.

I wasn't that impressed with Control, it didn't seem necessary to me. It might be because I've read Deborah Curtis' 'Touching From A Distance' a couple of times though. Also the depiction of Joy Division in the brilliant 24 Hour Party People is definitive to me.

The depiction of Joy Division in 24HPP is fleeting to say the least. That is not the films purpose.

control's a great vehicle to flog more deluxe edition albums...

well ok that's oversimplifying it, but that film annoys me for several reasons

It was an amazing film, why would you say otherwise?
The black&white set the film's mood,the acting is great even though the movie is depressing there are funny lines such as "it could be worst, you could be the lead singer of the Fall".

Dunno I thought the black and white was a tad predictable, but that's a personal gripe. I'm not saying it was an awful film either there are some scenes that really stuck out, and I've always been a JD fan...
It just seemed exploitative to me. I mean does everything have to be turned into hour-and-a-half chunks and given grandiose taglines ('he changed the face of music...') to be appreciated or discussed?
I think anybody who would potentially enjoy Joy Division would be able hear about them without the aid of a 2-disc deluxe edition DVD... New Order really milked the NME 'Godlike Genius' award situation and the word-of-mouth awareness transcends cult status.
Plus it's also basically a celebration of what a **** the man was, I mean no doubt those two albums were amazing but he was just totally fame-hungry and self absorbed.

haha, well... i guess if we're going by the book and the movie, he was a bit of a prat, Deborah Curtis was most articulate and frank in the former and you can't really sense any agenda, why bother?
Whatever he was clearly hooked on the rock n roll death myth and he ****ing cheated on Samantha Morton man!!!

Anton Corbin who directed the film was one of the first people to photograph Joy Division and as this is Corbin's first film the use of monochrome was implicit and a full turn of the circle. Curtis was reportedly an ******* to Deborah and that's why the film sounds so intriguing. He was a flawed person who happened to make music that is still talked about nearly 30 years later. Life as a musician is not as rose tinted as we would like to believe. He was just a kid and had many faults. His mistakes are no different to many many relationships out there. I think Curtis's appeal was that an ordinary guy can sometimes achieve greatness through mere banality.
