The dynamic sound was what really stood out to me but ja the camerawork was tops. The storyline was solid and I liked the way it explored its themes but it felt threadbare and amateurish in a lot of ways.

I really enjoyed the end of the film but some of the middle set pieces just seemed really disjointed. Reading about the film afterward gave me a better appreciation of the kind of cryptic background of the stories though.

It's not restricted to films you've seen in cinemas. You can talk about videos, movies on TV, Netflix etc.

Just watched Sneakers (1992) again. Hands-down my favorite hacker movie. The tech of the era seems like a lifetime ago, but the story holds up as an engaging and entertaining drama.

The power of the dog - Jane Campion (2021)

A disappointment. I thought the book was really powerful and engaging, but the film didn't manage to bring to life any of the tensions that made the book work. Maybe it was the casting (although I think Kirsten Dunst did a fine job and Jesse Plemons is dependable as always) or just Campion's inability to convey in pictures something I thought was quite filmic. Even the period setting seemed off, too modern and clean for what was supposed to be the rugged outback. 6/10

You review Dunst and that other guy, but not Cumberbatch, was it because he's great or because he's so bad he isn't worth a mention?

I haven't watched the movie, but so far I haven't watched it because it just seems like a standard modern pop movie - only set in the wild wild west

Your short review doesn't suggest the movie is actually anything else than that though

I have high hopes of anything by Jane Campion because I love top of the lake. I still need to see the piano and her other films

Cumberbatch is fine, but for me felt miscast. I imagined someone more rugged, less...Cumberbatch-y. :/ And also the kid is too hipster/model-like to be anything but a distraction. Again, I imagined him differently.

Maybe the biggest problem is that I read the book and loved it. It sets up the drama better.

Some books are difficult to film, but I really didn't feel this one was one of them.
