The Lives of Others. Second time I've seen it, it's probably one of my favorite movies.

The second time I have seen this in around 4 years and it's a film that really needs a thread of it's own in order to review and surmise. Powerful stuff but not always for the right reasons.

From Robert Jordan who created Conan The Barbarian and yet another character that simply seems to exist and not grab me emotionally. Despite this film being set in Dark Age Britain, it is far too solemn for it's own good and suffers from a severe lack of pace and character conviction. Disappointed.

This history of anti-black racism in American cinema could've been really good but unfortunately, even at 52 minutes, it feels long and dull. The points Melvin Van Peebles makes may be all too true but the way in which he presents them comes off not so much as biting social commentary or enlightening historical narrative but rather like listening to the drunk guy in the corner of the bar grouse about the state of the world for an hour.

a lot of talking heads and a lot of graphs/charts, but what do you expect? It's a documentary about mortgages and wall street. That being said, there were some really powerful and revealing interviews. I loved the interviewer's (directors?) wit, too. Saying things like "Forgive me but you can't be serious?" when interviewees would say ridiculous things. It was definitely worth watching, even if only for the one liners such as "Americans are, for the first time in history, less prosperous and less educated than their parents" and "Inequality of wealth in the United States is now higher than in any other developed country"

Also, great aerial cinematography.
