Seconded. Was obsessed with it back in the day. I should still have the DVD box set. It came in a tin can. My most prized DVD possession.

Nearly finished it now. My god it's the most realistic, no-holds-barred portrayal of war I think I've ever seen. Not a gung-ho in sight. Going on to The Pacific after this. Wish there was more of it. The interviews at the beginning of each episode only drive further home how this isn't just made up ****.
It should probably also be noted that my remark "it's intense" was BEFORE they got posted to Europe. Holy good **** on a bike! If episode one was level three, this is level a million now. The camera angles really add to it (the direction, I mean) - makes it really feel like there's someone trying to capture the action as it happens, and that they're in danger too. Superb.

I'm assuming you've gotten to Hurtgen Forest by now? You should really look that battle up for your war history journal. Absolutely brutal and there wasn't even a point to fighting it.

I saw the Pacific also but for some reason it didn't have the same impact for me.

Not to mention German artillery shells fired into the trees to use splinters as shrapnel. Just the worst meat grinder of the Western front.

Screaming trees indeed! You would never - ever - want to go to war after seeing that.
Just started The Pacific now. It's never going to be as good as Band of Brothers I would imagine, but let's give it a chance. The wounded Jap blowing himself up and taking the doc and another guy with him... wow. They had no idea what they were facing, did they?

Yeah finished The Pacific tonight and would agree with adidasss that it's not as good as Band of Brothers. Something about the kind of soap-opera parts forced on us - did any of us really care what happened back home? Fighting was beyond brutal though, and some very graphic scenes. I think the way it ended was a bit of a damp squib really.

For Band of brothers, Breaking point was my favourite episode. For Pacific, it's when Sledge is getting worn down, jaded by the war. I can't remember the episode's name. I read two of the books that formed the basis for each series (Helmet for my pillow, Band of brothers). They're both excellent reads. |

I love when Sledge goes to the college admissions or whatever it is after the war and the girl snippily asks him "Didn't the Marines teach you anything useful?" and he leans down and growls "They taught me to kill Japs. And I'm pretty damn good at it!"
