Um... I think most 3D movies do use those glasses. The old blue and red kind are certainly not very common these days at least.

How is that nitpicking? The 3D was one of the major selling points of the movie, talking about it is basically the opposite of nitpicking.

I used to see 3D as just a gimmick but this movie completely changed my mind.

Still, gimmicks are fun, in the old days movie venues had all kinds of gimmicks, like the drive in theaters that have become an iconic part of 50s american culture, the old grindhouse theaters which took the ingenius idea of combining movies and strippers and of course the old horror movie showings where theaters would be decorated with appropriate horror themed props and sometimes even feature live actors in costume to pop out and scare the audience at certain points of the movie.

Going to the movies used to be much more of a social experience, that's very much lost today in an era where a bunch of people think a movie can be experienced on a 3 inch iphone screen which is f*cking stupid, Avatar is proof that the theater is still the best possible way to experience a movie.

good point...there need to be more reasons to want to see it in a theater. a lot of friends avoid the theater totally and just end up downloading the movie. that is lame to me.

I still see 3D as a gimmick. I think, basically, until they come up with 3D where you don't have to wear glasses to watch it, it's always going to seem like a gimmick to me.

That is definitely exactly why they have been trying to re-introduce 3D lately. It's the same pattern things have followed every time they try to hype 3D. Back in the 50s it was because the movie industry felt threatened by the rise of TV, in the early 80s it was because they felt threatened by the VCR, and now it's because they feel threatened big, flatscreen HD TVs. The funny part to me is that they keep just applying the same solution again and again. You'd think they'd come up with something new.
