When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it was just another mindless, generic, cheesy, over-the-top PG-13 action flick like GI Joe and Transformers. But apparently James Cameron has devoted fifteen years of his life and put tons and tons of work into this movie and the special effects are really fantastic.

How can you think it will be ordinary? I think it looks like it's going to be a good action flick, but the reason I'm hesitant about it is because the Sherlock Holmes I remember wasn't exactly some fast paced action story.
I grew up watching this:

and reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (granted, it's been ages since then), and what little I remember of it doesn't seem much like this movie.

Because it's Guy Ritchie's first action flick, he doesn't have a proven track record and because Joel Silver is producing it, and before you say it, I'm aware he produced The Matrix and some really good action flicks in the 80's, but the man has also made a lot of god-awful movies.

Thing is though, there was quite a bit of action in a lot of Conan Doyle's original Sherlock stories. For example, Holmes has demonstrated knowledge of the martial arts for example at several key points. But, being that physical combat or action-adventure stuff was rarely emphasized, we can only imagine some of the action that he got into between the scenes within the frameworks of the stories themselves.

Hence, although it may or may not be that great an adaption, it will certainly be interesting to see the physical prowess of Sherlock Holmes emphasized in the upcoming film.

I'm walkin with you Anteater. I'm not saying there wasn't any action, just that I don't remember it being as action packed as this movie looks to be. Regardless, I'm still really looking forward to seeing it.

Yeah.

Including a movie so bad it almost ruined TriStar Pictures.

The main issue is that for a film hailed as a turning point in modern cinema it has been marketed as just another big bucks actioner. For the casual movie-goer there is nothing to suggest that it is anything other than what the trailers suggest - big guns and blue things. Predictions are predictions, they have no substance other than being an opinionated look into the future, I just know that I'm not excited for Avatar.

I think I'll rent it, just because I'm curious to see what $500 million looks like.

Well we have had extended trailers over here for this but it's still not floating my boat and before you all start saying that I am bashing it for the sake of it- I AM a Cameron fan but just because he has spent so many years and lot's of green on the film doesn't mean that it's immune form criticism. I will check it out sometime but the effects STILL don't convince me and lack that fluidity of live action. Time will tell.
