This thread is a whole year in the making! Yay! So I've been keeping count of how many films I've seen from January 1st til now and I'm up to 591. I know. That's a lot. The funny thing is that that number doesn't include repeated watches. I'll be over 600 by the end of the year but I wanted to start doing this now so I'm not still updating this in 2013. This is going to be a thread that I'll add more too over time just kind of like how users do "Top 100 albums" threads. I'm going to do the following categories and maybe a few more I think of from here and there...

Top 10 Comedies
Top 10 Psychological Thrillers
Top 10 Science Fiction Films
Top 10 Mind F*ck Films

Keep in mind that only the first category will be strictly films I've seen that came out this year. The rest will be a combination of everything I've seen from old to new.

TOP FILMS OF 2012

Okay, so I just realized that I have only seen 17 movies that were released this year. That is...well...weird. I did not take advantage of free movies at my theater that I no longer work at. I've been so busy the last four months that I haven't seen anything recently.

This list will not include the following films because I have not seen them yet. Amour/Lincoln/Frankenweenie/The Avengers/Life of Pi/Argo/Seven Psychopaths/Jiro Dreams of Sushi/The Loved Ones/The Imposter/Skyfall/Headhunters/Chronicle

One day soon. So let's do this...

The Snowtown Murders

What a brutal film. Australia never ceases to amaze me. They are in a class of their own when it comes to brutally realistic film making and I became a huge fan after this one. Long takes make the violence in this thing ever more so disturbing. The plot could have used a bit touching up as it gets a bit confusing but overall it's a wonderfully brutal film that makes you think afterwards. Don't expect anything happy.

Bernie

Okay I didn't know Jack Black could actually act. Did you? He was a perfect choice for this role as he comes off charming and warm instead of his usual crass and tempered. The film as a whole was very enjoyable as one would expect from Richard Linklater. It was filmed almost like a Christopher Guest film and the secondary characters were all fantastically hilarious in their interviews. Overall just an enjoyable film.

Lawless

I expected a lot more fro this one due to the amazing Proposition the vastly underrated The Road but it just wasn't all there. YET! It was an enjoyable film. The script has been done before. I knew what was going to happen but it was still pleasant to watch due to the great sets, costumes, and for the most part acting. Shia was better than he normally is but I just don't like the guy. Tom Hardy is always amazing and Guy Pierce gave one hell of a memorable performance. I really should have kept this off the list due to the criminal lack of Gary Oldman but I still enjoyed the movie.

The Dark Knight Rises

Yup. I wasn't floored by this movie. Don't get me wrong. It's an epic of a film. Yet it just takes such a backseat to The Dark Knight that its not even funny. The first two films to me were strictly Batman films with the addition of one of the best acting performances of all time. This movie however felt more like a superhero movie. Batman, Bane, Catwoman, JGL, someone else who won't be spoiled...just was too much to take in with the same effect like the first two gave. Tom Hardy was wonderful as Bane and I enjoyed watching JGL like I always do. The beginning was amazing as were all the shots filmed in IMAX but just as a whole I felt like the movie was just okay. It is however a must see film for its grandiose shots and Bane but after letting it settle for a week I just found the whole thing to be above average at best.

Prometheus

I feel like I enjoyed this one more than a lot more than most people. Yes I know that their are 60 plot holes and that the writing could have been way better but there are two huge saving graces that make this the 6th best movie I've seen this year and they are Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender. Scott directed the **** out of this film. It is utterly gorgeous. Every shot could be a painting and the man made probably the best 3D movie besides Hugo. I love sci fi. I love Ridley Scott. This movie just appealed to my senses. Michael Fassbender was also a huge plus. His acting was just so damn creepy and invigorating. Such a commanding presence when he was on the screen. He stole every scene. There were also some absolutely stunning scenes that will stay in the tops of sci fi lore for years to come including amazing surgery scene. That was one of the most intense bio horror scenes I've ever witnessed in a theater. A flawed but breathtaking film that just appealed to my inner visual sci fi geekiness.

Paranorman

Okay this is going to be a quick description mostly because there is a very simple reason why this film is number 5. It's fun as ****. Seriously, see this movie. The animation is top of the line and the jokes are not just for kids which to me makes or breaks an animated film. It was funny, disgusting, gross, and just one of the most fun movies I've seen in a long time. I can't wait for the next Laika release.

The Master

Paul Thomas Anderson is insane. If you were to ask me why half this movie happened and what the significance was I'd shrug my shoulders and tell you to watch it again and get back to me. This however did not deter me. While there were scenes in this film that were just not necessary and seemed to be like PTA was just trying to be artsy, there was WAY too many fantastic scenes with brilliant camera work that we could only expect from PTA. Did I mention the performances? Holy hell. Joaquin Phoenix BETTER win that Oscar. If he doesn't win the Oscar for Best Actor it will be the last straw. I will forever not take the Oscars seriously. What else could you possibly want in a performance? The man absolutely changed his entire being for that role. He put more into that role than I've ever seen anybody do. I'm not counting Daniel Day Lewis as Daniel Plainview because DDL is not a human being and therefore should not be counted with everybody else. Phoenix was electrifying. He was just...extraordinary. The only reason I wouldn't be extremely disappointed is if Phillip Seymour Hoffman won instead. He was also just out of this world good. There was one scene that I hated and loved at the same time. This was because PTA was trying to be too artsy but Hoffman was just a riotous lunatic that I couldn't take my eyes off of. It was awesome. Just see this movie because you'll be thinking and talking about it for days regardless of whether you liked it or not.

Cabin in the Woods

I'm going to be brief with this one because in order to fully explain my love for this movie would require me to ruin it for those who haven't seen it. I really don't feel like doing a spoiler section here but if any of you want t discuss it I will be happy to in the posts following this one. The film was just an unexpected classic that took me by surprise. I knew there was something special about it because a fellow projectionist knows what kind of movies I like and told me to see at ASAP because it was right up my alley. I knew a typical house in the woods horror film was not going to be seen. I hope Drew Goddard writes more movies because I'll watch every single one of them. Loved it.

Perfect sci fi movie. PERFECT. The time travel logic was sound and not confusing. The action pieces were intense and thriller. The acting was what it needed to be...GOOD. Just an overall perfect sci fi movie that made me giggle with excitement the whole way through. I really can't fault the movie anywhere except it does kind of 180 in mood towards the end of the movie. I don't care, it was still perfect.

One of the most pleasant and content movies I've ever seen in theaters. It was a perfect length with a great warm ending and just a funny and delightful beginning and middle. Every actor was perfectly cast and Anderson continued his streak of packing in a ridiculous amount of detail in every shot. The sets and costumes were charming and the music was of course fantastic as always. I don't think this is going to win any major awards and I'm not sure it should but for me it was the best movie I've seen this year. I actually paid to see it three times and this was when I was still working at the theater. The kids were perfect and my god was Bill Murray great. I wouldn't change a thing.

Films that just barely missed the cut
Cosmopolis - My god David Cronenberg can you please get a good screenwriter to direct your films? This one was written by Cronenberg himself and it just didn't work for me. It could however been great.
21 Jump Street - Let me say that this movie made me laugh. A lot. It just wasn't worthy to be on a film list. It just wouldn't feel right. Hilarious movie though.
Ted - Pretty much the same as 21 Jump Street.
Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter - Fun action movie that is just too ridiculous to be on a film list.

Films that were just...well bad.
Wanderlust/The Five Year Engagement/Dark Shadows - Don't see any of these movies. Not funny. Not good. Just bad.

I loved Prometheus too, minor (non-crippling) plotholes and all. It was gorgeous, Fassbender was amazing, and it thrilled me throughout. The ending gives me chills. Probably the most satisfaction I gained from a movie this year.

Great journal! Besides music, I'm quite fond of movies, even if I'm not a total buff.

I felt exactly the same about Prometheus

Despite some faults (which didn't bother me that much during the film), it was a highly enjoyable watch. The best film I've seen so far this year I believe would also be Moonrise Kingdom and hopefully, I'm watching Looper today. One thing I would've liked to see you comment on or place in your top ten list is The Hobbit, but I guess you've not seen it yet. I liked it a lot and would rank it highly and it was, without doubt, the best cinema experience for me this year as it was made for the big screen.

A couple more films I'm expecting a lot from are Beasts from the Southern Wild and perhaps Life of Pi. Oh, and Argo since I very much liked Affleck's earlier movies.

Great pick on Moonrise Kingdom. I went in not knowing what to expect--I had just heard that it was good and not much on what it was about--and I loved the quirky attitude that just draws you in. Glad to say that I got to see it in theatres as well.
