So this guy wrote a book.

Well if I MUST hear them before I die then I guess I should.
So here's what I'm going to do. Fortunately there is a torrent of all 1001 songs featured in this book ranging from 1916 - 2011. So I've downloaded that and then I'm going to stick the whole thing into a playlist and randomise it (The thought of listening to it in chronological order bores me).
Then between watching & writing about Doctor Who I'll listen to maybe an hour of songs every day and see what I think of them.
I figure I should give this guy's list a chance seeing he did feel fit to include a song by The Fall on this list.

I believe it is from the same publisher. They also have a 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Subway Sect - Ambition (1978)
To be honest this is the only Subway Sect song I can remember, I'm pretty sure I've heard more but I don't remember any of them. At least I had some idea about what this song sounded like before I heard it which must mean it's left an impression somewhere, and it is a good song.

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (2006)
Easily one of the best pop songs of the last 10 years and anyone who disagrees is dead from the inside.

The Shangri-Las - Leader Of The Pack (1964)
Band put together by legendary producer Shadow Morton who I bought a compilation of not long ago, the guy was responsible for some really cool stuff. I remember hearing this song when I was about 4 years old, loved it then, still love this song now as did some of my favourite bands, New York Dolls & Redd Kross among them.

David Crosby - Laughing (1971)
Boring middle aged man country.
How the hell does David Crosby get on this list 3 times (without even counting The Byrds because I quite like them) and Gram Parsons doesn't get on once?
This is bullshit, let's fix that.

I've never really been a fan of slow ballads but if i'm going to listen to one then why not listen to one sung by a man with a voice sweeter than Scarlett Johansson's pussy dipped in honey.

Candi Staton - Young Hearts Run Free (1976)
Sure, this is probably the kind of song that's probably played in gay bars all the time and the middle section sounds like a naff gameshow theme but there's something great about a well written catchy pop song which is what this is.

Mina - E se domani (1964)
Rather dull French ballad, it's all very well sung and everything but it could have easily been recorded 30 years earlier. I'd much rather listen to some more contemporary Chanson Pop. Françoise Hardy is already on this list but France Gall isn't, so her Serge Gainsbourg penned ode to blow jobs gets in.

I've heard this song covered by a million artists and none of them are as good as this one is. Maybe because I heard it first, who knows.

Armand Van Helden - U Don't Know Me (1999)
I had no idea what this song sounded like when I saw the title yet as soon as the intro kicked in I remembered the whole song pretty much instantly. I could go around looking for an alternate dance song from that era but why bother when this is so easily recognisable.

Ali Farka Toure - Amadnrai (1987)
Sorry but I fucking hate world music with a passion. Spending nearly 8 minutes listening to someone from Mali play a generic blues riff and shout in French isn't my idea of fun music. I'll leave this as an open spot to be filled when this is done.
Nobody is ever going to convince me world music is worth listening to, ever. I'm not the slightest bit interested in Mongolian throat warbling or Burkina Faso Grunge or whatever the hell they play there.

It's hard to hate this song as it's just so much fun to listen to, and let's be honest there's nothing as fun that you could really replace this with from that time. Rock n Roll was almost dead in the very early 60s & it was just wall to wall crooners in the charts.

New Radicals - You Get What You Give (1998)
I really hated this song when it came out, no doubt because of it being played about 20 times a day on the radio. Hindsight however is a wonderful thing. They did what most good pop acts should do, they released one album and pissed off.
Think of all the awful music that we would be spared had more bands taken the New Radicals lead. For that they get in. And at least they're not Semisonic, Wheatus or Sixpence None The Richer.
God I hope none of them are on this.

Crowded House - Weather With You (1991)
Sorry but I fucking hate this band.
I know without even looking that The Auteurs are never going to be on a list like this so...
