I absolutely love it, Gavin B! You are on a roll, sir. I really enjoyed the video too. I would die to be able to dance in the soul train, that looks like so much fun! You think their are still some funk joints around that still do that? And thanks for that bit of intersting info. By the looks of your member journal, seems like you know your stuff.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are in the vanguard of of a soul revival movement that is centered around the musician-owned and run Daptone Record label in Brooklyn.

The musicians and bands own collectively own Daptone aim to develop the label into a successful idependent label that becomes springboard for talented retro-soul artisits and bands, in the same way the Memphis based, black owned Stax Record Company had great success creating a crossover market for the grittier and funkier Southern soul music in the Sxities.

Daptone Records musical mission is a challenging one, especially since hip hop has been the sole dominating force in black music trends for over 30 years.

Part of the charm of Daptones funky retro-soul sound is it's a blast of fresh air into in the face of a hip hop scence that reached a state of creative ossification about 15 years ago.

Its about time for me to review a song by old pal...

Johnny Paycheck

What a character Johnny Paycheck is. Just look at that hat. And believe it or not, his last name was really Paycheck. Now Johnny Paycheck's talent cannot even closely be compared to that of Willie Nelson or Waylon Jennings or even Merle Haggard but this ol boy has more attitute and guts than all of them combined. Willie Nelson once said in reference to Paycheck "Talk about an outlaw! I ain't got a chance!". And he was right. Unlike other outlaws that added outer influences such as jazz into their music, Johnny Paycheck was 100% country outlaw.

When you want to listen to Johnny, you want to hear him wail out about his time in prison (which he was in and out of constantly) and his rants about U.S. Government taking all the workin man's money. Unfortunately, Johnny Paycheck tried his hand at a few lovey dovey songs which came off almost hilarious and completely unbelievable.

This song takes no time at all getting going. The beginning is mass of guitar and harmonica wailing and then Paycheck gets right to the point saying as the first line of the song "Well you can tell those boys at the I.R.S, this ol boy, hell I've had enough!". He pretty much says in this song what you will hear in discussions in small town bars throughout America.

I will caution you, Jackhammer, because it is alot of outlaw to take in at one time! But thanks for giving it whirl. I'm curious to see what you will think haha. I won't feel bad if you hate it.

Well I don't hate it but I also don't dig it either. I find it very hard to connect with this sort of music. I guess it's similar to many people hearing Joy Division for the first time! The sound is alien to what they are used to and/or look for. Sorry

This Johnny Paycheck dude isn't playing with a full deck. Here's a video of him telling his boss to take his job and shove it.

Please note that Mr. Paycheck is wearing a ridiculously oversized cowboy hat. The brim of the hat has circumference as large as an automobile tire. Mr. Paycheck should stop dresssing like a rodeo clown, if he wants people to take him seriously.

No doubt he will walk off his job, and return with his trusty AK-47 to settle the dispute with his boss once and for all.

This fracas began when Mr. Paycheck's boss kiddingly told him that guys who wore gigantic cowboy hats were compensating for their lack of size in "some other department."

Don't worry I completely get it! haha. Sometimes I wonder why I like him....but I do.

I would have probably suggested that you start off on something a little less ...hmmmm.....Johnny Paycheck. Like a nice Merle track. I have a couple songs to download below my Merle Haggard review in "Classic Country Albums" in the album review section, if you still want to attempt to understand this outlaw madness. Okay #1, I just want to point out that we have the exact same post count at this time!

#2 What do you mean he's not playing with a full deck? He's just singing a song that almost every person who has had a job they hate or a prick boss would like to sing along with.

#3 Oh, and I noted the hat. That hat was his trademark, and remember he was big in the 70's, so that explains the outfit. Plus I don't think he would have cared if anyone took him seriously. Johnny Paycheck was Johnny Paycheck whether you liked him or not.

Live version of the song

Even though I know this song was written about me, I think every woman in the universe would love to be serenaded with this beauty. Just the right amount of 80s sound, not too over the top corny/mushy, original lyrics, and the super sexy voice of Lou Gramm makes it a great love song.

I love the beginning with that very gradual and gentle opening and Lou's smooth perfect voice added in. And you just have to love that chorus. Lou Gramm is really singing high in this song but he has some unbelievable control that makes it sound so good.

I'll let you in on a secret but please don't get too freaked out when I tell you this.

When I was in college I used to put white grease paint on my face and sit and wait for the song to come on MTV so I could dance along with chain man. Those were the happiest moments of my life.

P.S. You're still the number one all time great rock music critic.
