Well thanks I appreciate it! Yes I am definitely know a lot about her. She's Twittered before about taking drugs particularly will writing, which is nothing new. I think she's at a point where she will always have fans but creatively needs to push herself in order to become a legend. She's experimented with drugs many times so disciplines herself to a point so that she doesn't fall off the deep end. It's really easy to do. She's been through a lot of health issues but I believe is mature enough to not throw away good opportunities or let drugs take over her ambition to be a successfully artist. I'm glad that you have faith! I hope she continues to strive for uniqueness. I'm not sure if her music will impact me as much as I (we) get older, but her style always will!

I`ve just scanned through your journal, Vanilla, and didn`t recognise a single name until I reached Lady G and the Stones, so I`ll make a quick comment on those, if I may :-
Lady Gaga is a very talented songwriter and those Fame/Monster cds show an unusually creative intelligence at work. I suspect that she`s smart enough to avoid some of those drug-related blunders that so many rock stars make too. I don`t know what Lady G is usually like on stage, but on the Gimmie Shelter clip she looked pretty good. Maybe a bit jittery, but dancing next to Jagger, in public, on ridiculously high heels would make anyone nervous, I should think ! IMO she did really well at maintaining the excitement of the performance.
Anyway, congratulations on your journal; I`m going to go back and have a look at some of those clips you`ve posted - see what the cool people in NZ are listening to !!

Kimbra

Now Kimbra has been around for a couple of years, mainly hitting the New Zealand music scene very sucessfully. To me she sounds like a jazzy pop artist and has now launched herself internationally thanks to her duet with Goyte. If you want to consider whether you want her album, here are some starting tracks to listen too. She has a very sexy, retro feel with a soulful voice that can really slip you into a track and prickle your skin. She now has a record deal in Australia so we will be seeing a lot more of her!







Strawpeople

A classic 90's group who never reached much success out of New Zealand and Australia but are a seriously underrated band. I highly recommend you check them out, they remind me of trip hop legends Massive Attack. The Strawpeople tracks tend to involve gorgeous vocals over slinky electronic beats put together by Mark Cassedy.

Why thank you, I thought you would not recognise many but that's okay, not many New Zealand artists are very famous. Yes that's what it must of been with Gaga, nerves. She is certainly a bundle of energy which is what I love about her. I don't think any other pop artist has reached out to their fans like Lady Gaga has. I wouldn't call myself cool, but I certainly have an obsession with the sound that we produce here.

Just out of curiosity, Vanilla, do you find Gaga to be a narcissist. I saw her a while back on a talk show, and she was the first guest, but then a second guest came on, and it seemed like she tried to take over their interview. Whenever she wasn't talking and sort of sitting off to the side, she just kept looking everywhere like she was bored, and then would chime in every ten seconds and make it look like it was a three way interview. This wasn't some round table sort of talk show either. She just sort of gave the impression of being one of those people who has to be the center of attention at a party and gets mad and starts texting when everybody isn't paying attention to her.

It's got to the point now where she has spent the last 5 years where it's all about her and nobody ever says no to her. It's kind of to be expected. I sometimes wonder if she is a bit condescending with fans too.

Iggy Azalea - Glory (EP)



I am so impressed with her. I never in my lifetime thought there could be a white female rapper. She's like the white single female of rap. Her beats are well produced, her rapping is clear and fresh and she's got style! The only downside is she sort of sounds like Ke$ha minus the dirtiness and autotune. I am eagerly awaiting her new album The New Classic. She dabbles in electronica, rap, trap, and disco. In fact, she covered Deee-Lite's 1990 song Groove Is in the Heart. Be sure to check her out, she is well worth it!



By track:

Million Dollar Misfits feat Bob - great beat but awful on Bob's part. He is useless and completely ruins the mood.

Murder Bizness feat TI - This song is very clicky. Her Australian accent hits hard on this track but you can tell she is trying to make it more American. Her verses are clear with a great verse by TI.



Runaway feat Push T - Iggy sings partly in this track and it's refreshing. She's got a thick attitude but not over-hyped like Nicki Minaj. It's basically describing her trip by herself to the US from Australia where she found her place and was discovered by her label. Originally a YouTube star she was signed up pretty quickly after by Grand Hustle Records.

Me Myself My Money - She describes her successes using money as a metaphor. Pretty similar to the last 3 tracks.

Flash feat Mike Ponser - This song is less rapping, more electronica with a dreamy back track which coincides nicely with her verses about love and relationships. Completely my favourite track. I can see she's got a wide scope, what with her recently release EP TrapGold which features delicious trap music, so check out my Trap thread in electronica for some of her tracks!

Bailter Space



Since the late 80's this Kiwi band has been playing indie atmospheric noise rock with elements of shoegaze. They have released 7 studio albums and have never made in into the mainstream. After their move to many years ago New York their sound changed by focusing on the melodic content of the music. Their most recent album released in 2012 is Strobosphere. I highly recommend them, you can get taken away to another place listening to their music and they are comparable to Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies.

I would like to spend some time discussing my music tastes. I know that many people wonder what I am into and I will explain this now. First I need to give a little information about what I originally started listening to. When I was 10 I had a radio and started listening to classic rock because I had listened to my Dad's records, for example the Bee Gees, U2, Cream, Uriah Hero, Canned Heat, America, Deep Purple and so on. When I was 13 I began buying my own CDs and started buying metal like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, System of a Down, Korn, Opeth etc. My grandad died that year and I spent every Saturday and Sunday with my Grandma keeping her company, watching movies with her and feeding her cats. In the evenings before bed I would turn on the radio and each Saturday night I would listen to Gatecrasher's remixes, a mixture of House, Trance and Techno which I fell in love with, opening my mind to Electronica. I had my guy mates loaning me alternative and metal artists like Tool and CKY and I began buying more Prog and Classic Rock including Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, Queensryche, Black Sabbath and the Eagles. Most of the music I listened too was Mainstream and I didn't tend to listen to many obscure artists aside from a few local rock bands who's gigs I went too.

I joined Music Banter when I was 18 and that is when my taste began to develop. I met members like Urban who had taste completely advanced and broad compared to mine. I remember in the first six months that I was asked what I actually listened too and I ended up posting about the Cranberries, Tool, Nirvana, Radiohead, Muse and all the usual ones most people anywhere would listen too. I was at University and I met some great friends who introduced me to some fantastic Drum and Bass, New Zealand artists like Shape Shifter, Concord Dawn, State of Mind, The Upbeats and Kora who quickly became my favourites. I saw them live many times, in underground bars where we'd drop party pills and dance like fecking idiots. I only have in the last few years managed to expand my tastes far enough and learn more about myself in the process. I hope that I never stop this process and I plan on sharing my experiences in this journal along the way.

As some of you may know I am a big fan of Dubstep and in my thread have made some excellent recommendations about what artists are captivating and going beyond the predefined sound that it has been characterised as. There is some brilliant producers and DJs who put in their own flavours and unique flare onto the tracks. Artists like this include Burial, Distance, Flux Pavillon, etc.

My current list of artists I'm checking out is Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa and pg.lost.

The Pretty Reckless



These guys are one of my guilty pleasures, I can't get enough! I have particularly enjoyed their album Light Me Up and their EP Hit Me Like A Man. They also released some demo tracks as well that are not of the best quality but their track Zombie still sounds amazing.

The band members are Taylor Momson (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Ben Phillips (lead guitar, backing vocals), Mark Damon (bass) and Jamie Perkins (drums). Taylor Momson has featured on TV including Gossip Girl which I was an avid watcher of! Taylor has a husky, and rock chick style of vocals and I like her don't give a **** attitude towards the media.

Their style of music is alternative rock and the topics that are used is love, sex, and drugs - very rock and roll! They have been on a few tours but haven't quite come to New Zealand yet so fingers crossed they do.
