Default The Chelly Chronicles: Miss Vennicoe's Music Journal

Hello and welcome to my music journal, in which I'll be talking about the albums I listen to, the records and other music things I buy, the songs I (try to) write, my adventures in the world of music journalism, and so forth.

To start things off:

Today, in anticipation of writing an article on the group and early Bowie in general, I've been listening to a bootleg Arnold Corns compilation - apparently complete. Bizarrely, it includes a version of Looking for a Friend on a radio show hosted by Gene Vincent, of all people! Vincent's introduction makes reference to a version of The Supermen by Arnold Corns - seems that that didn't survive time. If anybody could direct me to when and on which show that was broadcast, that would be fantastic. Incidentally, Bowie's vocals on the Corns demo of Lady Stardust are amazing. And quite the tearjerker in light of recent events.

Some of these songs really should've made it to Bowie records. Almost all of them wound up on '90s Ryko reissues, but I would've liked to hear them in their proper context - especially Right On Mother on an album. Also, whatever became of the first three takes of Sweet Head? All that I can find anywhere is take four, and that's what made it to the 1990 Ryko "Ziggy" reissue. It's that Corns Supermen that really intrigues me, though.

Now for my night-time listening routine - "The Idiot"/side two of "Low"/"Blackstar". My "Bowie requiem trilogy". I would have added in side two of "Heroes", but that would have been a little over-the-top. I do sometimes play Dylan Howe's takes on Neukoeln to begin, though. I know, it's been over two weeks, but some of us... y'know.

This morning, I listened to "Aladdin Sane" from Time onwards, then put on "Scary Monsters". Up the Hill Backwards has always been, lyrically, one of my favourite songs on "Scary Monsters", talking about unemployment and disability (possibly referring to Terry?). "The vacuum created by the arrival of freedom and the possibilities it seems to offer" - now that I can relate to.

Breaking up the Bowie with (Borland's band) The Outsiders - "Calling on Youth". Boy, do these songs hit hard.
