THE GIG

Oh boy, oh boy...

So the show happened.

The festival
The place was gorgeous, just a little countryside house, next to an unfinished barn and a little house (that looked like a tower, and served as the backstage). The terrain wasn’t very big, or anything, but it was more than enough to host the festival, as the audience wasn’t as big as expected (50-70 people overall, in contrast to about 200 expected).

It was one of these places, where you come in, and all you see is plenty of people playing guitar, drinking, laughing, putting up tents, making a fire, etc. Very hippie-like atmosphere.

I went there with Szelest and his girlfriend, as she has a driver’s licence and a car. The trip was quite pleasant (though a bit akward, as I’ve never seen her before).

We arrived at about 6pm, but the concerts didn’t start yet (because Kilijanek and his other band showed up late as well, and they were supposed to open the day).
But that was fine, as I’ve never seen them play before, and really wanted to.
They started playing at about 7:30pm, so the entire festival had a delay of over 2 hours.

They were great by the way. It’s a shame they don’t record their songs, as their music is something I’d be really listening fanatically, if only it was somewhere to be found.
They played without their singer, which to be honest I’ve found to be a big improvement, over what I’ve heard from the three songs they actually did record.

Our gig was supposed to start at 10pm, so there was plenty of time to spend. There was plenty of people who seemed pretty nice and all, but considering my socializing skills I’ve spent most of it just wandering around the festival, the country roads around it, etc (sometimes Talking to Szelest, if he wasn’t on a romantic field-trip with his girl, or to Kilijanek, after he woke up from his nap).

Anyway, all the bands that played before us were this kind of metal/punk stuff I don’t really dig (at all, actually). So the other shows weren’t much of a big deal to me, and even what crossed my mind was that in comparison to them, our set will really shine, and be memorable for the audience.

Anyway: 10pm comes around and the concerts are nowhere to be even begin to end.

And the organiser told us, that it’s quite prabable we won’t play that day.

Absolute panic.
Szelest was unable to play the next day, as he had to come back to Warsaw. I wasn’t very keen on the idea of playing at 5pm in the full sun the next day, as we could (and should ) be the star of the evening that day. The second guitarist was acting all weird (I think I don’t get that guy), but Kilijanek kept it

And as he is friends with the guy who organised the whole thing, he managed to convince him to stop the playing at midnight, and not 11pm, as it was supposed to be.

So we went up on stage at 11:20. And here the real problems began.
First off, the band that played before us ****ed up the bass amp, so it was always distorted as if the membrane was falling off. Second, one of the mics was gone (and we’re a 2 singers band). Third, the keyboard was all packed up and ready to go back to Warsaw (and we have 2 songs that needed the keyboard). Fourth, Szelest and Jędras couldn’t hear themselves when playing.

So the first 20min of our show was spent on soundcheck. After those 20min we were like „well, **** this, let’s play as it is”. And the sound enginner said he’ll work on our sound as we go along.

And so it began.

The show itself
We started with Witamy w Naszym Cyrku, and the audience was kinda half-sold half-not on our idea for music. Though there was a couple of people trancing/dancing away to it.

Then we went for the harder sound, with the punky Ja Padam, to match the audience expectations about the kind of music they were hearing the last couple of hours, but good this time. Here a bit of craziness started to go off in the audience.

To be honest our morale wasn’t very high, as we couldn’t hear ourselves very well, and we thought we are playing really badly. So we thought of going to certainly the strongest song in the set, which is my composition Tea in a Jar.

It played out really well. I even thought it was perfect. As finaly we’ve played it as it should be played (if you ask me) which is 2 guitars, bass and drums (and not the rehearsed version with keyboard/backing vocal instead of the second guitar).

It’s then that we realised that we don’t have much time left, so we jumped to Mada instead of going to Chocolate Man as planned.
This one didn’t go very well if you ask me, because it’s supposed to have this jazzy, ethno feel to it, but the sound engineer turned on an overdrive on Szelest’s guitar, so it sounded pretty weird. This song was albo supposed to have a keyboard in it, and the lack of it was really felt.

The organiser came up and said that it’s past midnight, and that he would be Grateful if we’d play just one more song (which of course, as we weren’t hearing **** of what we’re playing, we understood as another way of saying „you suck”).

So we went for Jasna Strona Słońca, our reggae tune.
Here the Real craziness started, with people dancing and chilling, and even though we didn’t hear much of it, we were having lots of fun as well.

And then we went offstage.

Aftermath & Feedback
As I’ve mentioned, during the show we thought we played pretty badly, so it wasn’t the best posible first experience of a live show, but as it turned out, we didn’t actually.

Just as I walked off the stage a guy came running and said he loved the songs and it reminded him of some niche „70s emo stuff” he’s into. So I was quite surprised. Afterwards, as we were the last show, a big hippie-punky party started, during which at least 5 or 6 folks came to me saying they loved the show. And one guy asked me whether „I’m interested in a second project”, as in band, so that was quite nice.

Though I’m not really sold on the idea of having multiple bands at the same time.

Anyway, too bad the concert wasn’t recorded, I’d like to know what the hell did the audience hear, because we sounded really good apparently.

Next month I’ll try to convince Szelest & Kilijanek (&Jędras) to truly record these songs, so that we would change our playing thinking/style/routine to a different one (one that would impose more structure in songs). And also to have something to show to clubs/bars, etc

And so the story continues

I feel you

Well, this was the end of season 1, ending on a cliffhanger (will they make an album?), we’ll see whether the TV station will be interested in a second season

STUDIO

Oh, by the way, this is one room of the two room-studio we've jamming at.

It's the bigger one (the chillout zone, with the ceiling 4m high).

Sadly I don't have a photo of the actual studio (it's where I'm standing while taking the picture).

Kilijanek is the one featured in the back of the room with a guitar.

The – (Potential) – Album Cover

I posted this one earlier in the thread, but as I still wasn't sure on how to post images around here it looked terrible. Here's the actual one:

It's a fairly new collage of mine, with, as I mentioned before, random letters glued onto it, that happened to mean "I love you" in Romani.

In a couple of days, I'll write some new stuff about what's happening around here with the boys

Recording

Hey guys
Today we’ll be playing together for the first time since the concert.
With the intention of recording the songs we’ve got so far.

Wish us luck!

Season 2

Yeah, so obviously the recording didn't go as planned at all, because otherwise I would've been all around this thread writing about it

We did have a jam though. Our first one ever outside our studios walls (as we were evicted). We played for about three hours, mostly rehearsing the songs we've already played.
But as it happens we managed to write two songs during the session. One being quite reminiscent of the Black Sabbath sound, the other one resembling more The Beatles ("Something" to be specific, as the main verse has that one chord descent – A to A7 in this case, and so on and so forth).

We haven't played since then – well, I did play with Szelest and I did play with Kilijanek in the meantime, it's just that we didn't play music together trio.

I went to France a month ago, while Kilijanek stayed in Warsaw, and Szelest tried to make sense of his life after being evicted from his home (where he was living or over 15 years), so it's quite natural we hadn't played.

On the other side – the brighter one – I started to talk (well, write more) with the second guitarist we have in the group. About songwriting, about life, all that stuff. And I've come to really like this guy (even though there ain't that much chemistry going on). So, I think, that if – it'll ever come to that – there'll be a discussion/or vote about keeping him in the band: I'll be voting "for".

79%

Another good one, is that both Szelest and Kilijanek are coming to France to me. They'll both stay a week or maybe more.
You see: my parents bought a little apartment in the town of Sete, a few years back. It's a lovely town – Georges Brassens was it's most well known inhabitant – in the south of France, next to the sea, very close to the city of Montpellier, just in front of Maroko sea-wise.
The plan is to bond once again as friends and as a band, and to maybe play some music (so far I've got just one acoustic guitar and two harmonicas around here, but there's a weekly antiques market every Sunday, so we'll try to buy something more).

Things are looking up
Stay tuned
