Okay, as for British films,
this is what the British Film Institute (BFI) thinks, they have restored alot of greats (all my Kurosawa DVDs are BFI =P) and definitely know what they're talking about.. It's like the Criterion of the UK. Although some of the films there should be avoided. haha. My first recommendations would be Powell & Pressburger's 'Black Narcissus', 'Alfie' (which you've probably seen) annnnd 'Billy Liar'. We have produced some good social realist stuff and some other assorted domestic genre films. All the great directors debunk to Hollywood! If you liked 'Happy Go Lucky' watch that director's 'Secret & Lies', which is pretty much the archetypal Leigh film - i.e. depressing as f
uck - but amazingly acted.
