well, the book we used in our dialect classes was written in 1967 and I guess that the language has changed a lot since then :D I will probably watch Caramel a few more times during the summer and I will ask you a few questions for sure :D

well we don't have any rules about the colloquial language, as it's really free. We use a lot of French and English at times, as the Arabic language isn't progressing any more. And you can actually just built some words using the basic Arabic rules. Like the verb"Zahaba" can become "Yazhabou" "youzhabou" "zahibon", as any of the three lettered basics. You can just take the English word "mixing", and it would become "maxaj", "maxajo", "mouxij" or "moumaxaj". So it's pretty cool in this way. I think you can only learn it by talking and listening. I, even, learn some new words everyday. Example: "Mkhawwar" = Very Hungry. "Jeligh" = annoying. "enno"=some word we just add every once in a while, just to buy time.

If you can, just re-watch the sequences in Caramel you found yourself not understanding, and ask me about them. I think that would be the best thing for now. At least, you'll learn about those words, that usually are very much used in the slang.

well, I understood half of it, but some expressions were completely unfamiliar to me. It was more understandable than the Syrian dialect. We had dialect classes this year, but those were really, REALLY bad classes, and we learned only the basics. That is why I want to see as much movies as I can, to help me understand more of the language. Of course I want to see good movies (such as Caramel) and not the boring Syrian ones... Do you know if there are any good language schools in Beirut that teach the colloquial language?

I thought I'd ask you: When watching "Caramel", did you find some difficulty understanding the Lebanese dialect, or did you find it familiar in some way?
