Also, the "this influenced that, this came before that etc.." thing doesn't matter at all. It's not even about being Punk or not. Genres are just labels that we need to make things a little more clear, but they are nothing more. If you pay too much attention on genres, you'll end up watching the tags and forget about the music. The genre, the influences, and all of that, doesn't matter at all when it comes to listen to the music. Now, forget about history for a moment:

Ramones = happy
Sex Pistols = depressive

I think that everyone will agree with this. It's a matter of fact.
Then, it's up to you whether you prefer happy music or depressive music. As far as I'm concerned, I prefer happy music.

P.S. Don't get me wrong, some of the best musicians around are quite depressive, and I'd say that most of my favorite ones aren't happy at all. But it's not for their depression that I love them. They have to give you something more. They might be soulful, they might be deep, they might be ironic or bluesy or energic.. but not JUST depressive. Trust me, it's not depression that'll make you buy an album and play it infinite times a day. It's something else.

It has been a while since I listened to Never Mind The Bollocks but I don't remember it being depressive music.

If you don't find them depressive then it's OK, nothing to argue. I admit I exaggerated when I said that it's a matter of fact that they're depressive.

Just from a lyrical aspect it's Sex Pistols by a mile for me.
Ramones lyrics are meh, juvenile and not provocative in any way, they were singing about teenage problems, breaking up with chicks and stuff.
Pistols lyrics were anti-establishment and much more gritty, rebellious and provocative.

So, Pistols, no brainer.

The Ramones have two good songs, Pet Sematary and Bonzo goes to Bitburg. The rest really just sounds the same for me. Sex Pistols are harder to listen to, but when I am in the mood they slap. Way more exciting. Their lyrics were also better. Talked against the british establishment and whatnot.

Also on a side note, I do not really understand how the clash is punk. Sure, they do have songs that sound punk, but for me a lot of their stuff does not sound punk at all, or maybe I just don't know what I am talking about.
