When did you start losing interest in Hip Hop and start listening to other genres?

in 8th grade when i realized wearing polo jeans and ecko shirts while listening to shyne and juvenile were too gangster for me. I then moved on to nu-metal and rock and slowly converted to metalcore. I now realize that metal is much better than rap.

I started listening to other genres after Ice Ice Baby came out. I heard that track and thought, wow, what a riff. So then I got into Queen and David Bowie, ditched hip-hop for good, and never looked back.

huh, for some reason i thought you younger than that. you should check out the stuff that came out from '91-'93, it was a revolutionary era in hip-hop and quite a bit of good stuff has come out since then.

i was into the so-called parent-baiting hip-hop around the turn of the millenium, I inherited a bunch of classic gangsta CDs (like the best of NWA, the Chronic etc) from a well-to-do mate who 'ditched' hip-hop and took up metal (?!). One of my favourite albums when it came out was 'the W'.
I moved out of that 'phase', only to come back to hip-hop several years ago via the older stuff (De La, Tribe etc), appreciating it in ways I hadn't before - lyrically, philosophically, blah di blah. So it's all good in the hood. I came full circle last year and re-acquired the Slim Shady and Marshall Mathers LPs having long since ditched the CDs. haha, They're really good.

I've never lost interest in Hip-Hop, though it did definitely help me get into other genres(especially reggae.)

I don't get this idea that hip hop is a kids starter kit to get him into real music, i still listen to rap more then any other genre.

Metal was the first music I started getting into. Then my mom used to listen to the Rap stations a lot, which got me into the scene, and this video game Def Jam: Fight for New York had a lot of rap on it along with the hood culture. It sounds weird but I picked up a lot of stuff from that game. But anyway, Dangerdoom was my first rap album I got big into, then it was either Lil Wayne or Ice Cube.

But that's how I started out.
