A lot of people in the media give Jay Z unfair praise. For some reason right around the time of that new york song with alicia keys came out it seemed he had built up this image of being the king of rap somehow

This is what I never understood, it seemed all of a sudden that everybody who had proceeded and exceeded Jay-Z had been forgotten about and he was now hailed amongst media and music critics as the Godfather of Rap.

I suppose it's kind of what happens to bands in other genres. Like Nirvana, Oasis, Daft Punk or whatever. People listen to Jay Z and compare him to worse Rap acts that they have heard of, without even bothering to look into the genre past what they have already heard.

Jay Z is a fine rapper, good wordplay, flow, unusual rhyme scheme- a lot of the same stuff you could get from Big or Ghostface, but good nonetheless. He can tell a pretty interesting story sometimes too, like on 99 Problems or Lost One.

Ice Cube's the man too, mega intense and pretty thoughtful in political aggression. How could anyone knock him? AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and the Predator are heavy as hell, yet you're gonna knock him praise Immortal Technique, the guy who takes Cube's aggression and delivers it with a kinda Nas flow?

he is pretty cool guy though, he always sounded a little too limited to me though. Same for everyone Dre produced at that time, especially snoop.

Just goes to show producer is everything
