Took a another listen to Long live, and this time it BLEW ME AWAY. I just didn't realise how good some of the songs were, maybe I was underwhelmed by the average rapping, but this guys hooks and beats are out of this world.

Pheonix is like Hip Hop mixed with shoegaze. Its absolutely blissful. Fashion Killa is extremely catchy, I loved Goldie this time around than the first time, same with long Live ASAP self titled song, Hell was amazing with that girl on the hook, level of rapping on 1 train and that string beat is amazing, the gritty stuff with suddenly and Jodye are great, and f********** problems is a great novelty song.

Saying this though, I still think some of this album is hurt by some atrocious songs. Wild for the Night is unbearable, Pain is the most uninspired rap song I've ever heard. If only two solid songs from his mixtape was on here instead of these two, I'd go as far as to say this was a CLASSIC. I loved it that much.

Classic gets tossed around waaaaay too much

Here's a vid that you should check out that breaks it down a bit on what should be considered a classic.

Doesn't get thrown around enough

Also I did not call it a classic.

no but you did say two solid songs alone could make it a classic. I'd call that a stretch too, and I think that's what djchameleon was commenting on.

Goofle i agree. What cultural impact does Kendrick Lamaar actually bring when he's recycling shit from the 90s on his "Classic"? Channel ORANGE defines the contemporary aesthetic much more clearly and i doubt many are really calling it a classic.

You said it was too songs away from being a classic. Just because you enjoy an album immensely doesn't make it a classic.

Yeah, I must have missed the online buzz about Nas' last album being up for consideration as a classic but I disagree. As much as I liked GKMC I wouldn't go around calling it a classic either. It was a solid effort but classic is pushing it a bit. There is also the point of artists using a formula to attempt to make an album a classic which defeats the purpose imo.

Classic!

I had to say it one more time, I don't think I used the word enough throughout my post.

Yeah, "classic" definitely gets thrown around too much. GKMC is close imo but Compton and Real hold it back I think. What do you guys think about the guy in that video basically throwing out Jeezy and 50's debut albums as classics?

Yeah, that was quite ridiculous. The guy obviously isn't there to discuss underground Hip Hop.

Well, I mean, I'm not totally against calling 50's debut a classic, because that was definitely a good album and the impact was immediate but Jeezy's debut is NOT a classic. The album is solid and a has a few standouts but it's not even close to a classic.
