I hate using the term 'classic' to describe music. It's a presumptuous term that has a very loose definition. It seems by the laws of the internet that the term can be chucked at some albums unquestionably and yet superior albums cannot be classics.
To me, I think 'classic' means to have stood the test of time, but even then I think it's unfair to say an album released in the last 5 years cannot be considered classic.
I just prefer to use adjectives; good, great, super, bad, average, terrible, etc.

To me, classics are totally dependant on general consensus, rather than quality. An example of this would be Illmatic. For me it is just a good album, but I wouldn't doubt it is a classic because of the reputation it has held.

I agree with you. Jeezy's debut just rode the wave when Southern rap was really big but I don't feel like his debut contributed to the strength of other similar albums from that area during the time.

True, but there also can exist personal classics right? Some albums I'm super nostalgic about and they serve as classics for me (like Smashing Pumpkins' "Adore" for example) but at the same time I can recognize that they aren't overall/general classics.

@Manky: "Classic" is definitely a polarizing term and whenever a good album gets dropped, (especially in hip hop) people start throwing around the "classic" term like main street hookers throw STDs. I'm not gonna lie though, I love debating on what is "classic" and what merits a classic album must have. To me, for an album to be a surefire classic, it has to stand the test of time.

I'm not into Rocky's or Ferg's rapping skills, but the production on Long.Live and the production of Ferg's songs Persian Wine and Work is some of my favorite production in the rap genre right now. I've been into dark, kind of abstract beats lately. These dudes need to seriously evolve their rap skills though. Best Rocky verse imo was the first verse on the first song of Long.Live. If he spit like that every time he'd be one of the best.

Their freestyles were better than I was expecting. You can tell when they switch from doing off the top to spitting some writtens but overall still pretty damn good freestyles.

/\ These dudes definitely have potential. I'm digging their movement, their raps are just inconsistent. Ferg's first verse on Persian Wine he's killing it, but what the hell happened on the second verse? And the hook was weak too. It was just trite, and for a beat that was so haunting and avant-garde for mainstream rap acts, I expected more from the hook. Same with the first song on Rocky's Long.Live, the second verse just wasn't comparable to the first. He had good flow and delivery but literally was rapping about nothing, unlike the heavy social commentary on the first verse. The hook was SICK though. And the beat is amazing.

Ah man there's something about Shabba that I can't get enough of. It's been stuck in my head for days.

What's funny is I doubt most of you are old enough to know who Shabba Ranks is.
