True appreciation comes when you get past bob marley and realize how rich and diverse the genre and its history actually is.

I mean it's not exactly Elliott Smith is it?
Elliot Smith is great, but is it apt to compare an entire genre of music with a single artist of a completely different style, as enigmatic and talented as he might be?

re Smith - I was being sarcastic, thank christ

re pot - I don't think you need it, but it's basically an intrinsic part of reggae's production and development from ska, and part of the the listening experience if we're talking dub.
I've not smoked for at least a year, so I'm not advocating it as being absolutely necessary for enjoyment of the music, I think that's one of the alienating factors for alot of people who don't get reggae.

re Bob - I was never into Marley personally, missed him out completely. Do I need correcting?

It is all about the vibe and the ambience. Roots music is never about musical ability. It's about history. It's about oppression. Get past that barrier and stop thinking that you should be musically impressed, you just need to find that easy, relaxed demeanour that is needed for Reggae.
I think it is because (certanly why i post much less there) is ecause the majority of people on the boards stick to the Indie, Rock, HipHop forums. And when posting in Reggae section, all threads end up in something about Sublime, Marley, or Tosh.

Maybe i m off, but thats what iv noticed, and it would be great if it were actually intelligently posted in.

DUBMATIX

Here is an easy entry compilation from a Canadian band that has been slowly making waves in the reggae world. They are essentially a duo but can act as a back up band, DJ Soundsystem or remixers for hire. Their music has been called electro-dub and that has a grain of truth in it. Their genetic make up is a popular and accessible mash up of roots reggae, dance and electro dub whilst still being very respectful to the Reggae genre. These guys love what they do and if this does'nt pique your interest to the delights of Reggae you may as well stop here!

I think it's because people think 'Reggae? You mean Bob Marley? Yah, he's ok.'.

Most people don't even know any good reggae bands besides bob marley and perhaps the wailers. I dunno I suppose it takes a different type of taste. Just like not everyone likes classical music... I actually really like bedouin soundclash. Although I might just be biased because I know the band members.

This was really cool, pretty diverse as well. I wasn't expecting the dance beats and rap. I really need more dub. What are the essential dub records?
