Madlib VS Reggae

Here's Don Drummond, a world class Jamaican musician, playing 'Man In The Street'

and here's your brain on drugs (Madlib's lazy, dull remix of the song)

I'm sure Don Drummond lived a completely sober lifestyle.

I think the madlib version is OK. I like the hard stop he does with the tempo. I think other genres, especially Jazz, are easier to mix and restructure, ie El-P's High Water

Don Drummond died at age 37 in prison. He was there because he murdered his girlfriend and its suspected that he was murdered in prison in retaliation for that. I'm not sure what recreational drugs he took when he was alive.

I meant only to say that Madlib was clearly too stoned to make anything good out of Drummond's music which was brilliant.

Don Drummond was a rastamon. I'm not sure what recreational drugs he took either, but I could venture a guess :-P

I'm not disagreeing on the quality of the album, I am disagreeing on Madlibs drug consumption being the clear cause for it. What kind off mind set was he in for quasimoto?

I'm not trying to sound like a broken record with my chronic endorsement of ganja, it just seemed peculiar to blame it on that when i don't think he's ever been sober in his music career.

That's a good point. I guess I'm just mad that he didn't make classic Reggae as awesome as he probably could have. 'Shades of Blue' is great and I like some of those remixes probably more than I like the originals. In both cases he was given rare access and free reign to remix classics because he deserved it. But he fucked up on 'Blunted in the Bombshelter' and it makes me sad and disappointed in him. Such a wasted opportunity.

I liked Blunted In the Bomb Shelter to be honest. I am not super deep into Reggae, but I have heard a lot of King Tubby, The Skatalites and The Upsetters etc, and I think Madlib did them proud.

Wasn't perfect, but a few tracks were outstanding.

I hate being presumptuous but I think that if you were super deep into classic reggae that you'd feel less proud of Madlib's renditions.

The album's not terrible but it generally doesn't do justice to the original songs.

This album is a fantastic mix, but his recent Medicine Show '420 Chalice All Stars' mix tops it!! Also, if you dig 'Blunted in the Bombshelter,' be sure to get DJ Shortkut's follow-up for another stellar reggae mix =)
