Are You In A Band

I played bass in three bands before I joined the military.

1st being A Safe Crisis. A post-hardcore/punk band in high school, we started off playing Thursday covers and went on to write some other originals. Never released a demo, played alot of small shows but nothing to speak of.

2nd Band I was in was when I was about 19-20. 2 dudes from ASC and a couple new guys, we were called The Greenfield Spy. We played all originals and this is were I first experienced recording. Nothing too serious, we just did a couple songs to put online. We played alot of shows over the course of about 1 1/2 and then had to break up.

3rd Band was a progreeive metal/ metal-core band called MurderInMind (I know I never liked that name either). This was bby far the bet band I was in, we played alot of huge shows, some small festivals, and even did a demo session. We opened for Gwen Stacy, Kingston Falls, and The Analyst among others. This is were I began to see what being in a travelling band could actually be like. Unfortunately, it didn't work out and I was forced to move on to something a little more responsible now. I can't wait to play again though. Hopefully I can get a band together out here sometime soon.

thanks man, sounds like you had some pretty decent experiences as well.

for myself though i have a hard time considering myself to be in a 'band', which is why i always list it in quotes. i have all sorts of issues with music and celebrity stemming from my old man and my upbringing resulting in a major disdain towards the musical status quo.

unlike the majority of other people who claim they don't care about making it (but wouldn't mind if they did.) i REALLY don't care about being successful with a band so i don't see any point in adhering to typical methods like... writing songs, or rehearsing sets. which makes it hard to find people to play with on a long term.

odds are my next 'band' will be a 2 piece. although i'm half debating trying my hand at a full on solo thing. really depends on whether or not i can secure a jam room in the near future.

Yeah I know what you mean, that was a serious issue in my last outfit. Everyone was so dead set on making it big and didn't put enough into the music as they did the hype. I think they spent more time working on the website than we did rehersing.

A two piece would be interesting. Would you use a synthesized bass tracker through your guitar like the guy from Local H? How would you do that?

p.s. A good jam room can be hard to find, especially one that meets all the necessary requirements llike (security, noise, central location, climate control, price etc.) that has always been an issue with my jams. It's hard to find a place everyone can get together.

2 piece would likely be a guitar tuned down to C and drums. i find that 2 steps below standard provides a nice sonic background to fill out most of the auditory gaps within the whole of the music being played. a bass line adds a nice melodic component but it doesn't sound like something is necessarily missing.

as for jam rooms they're pretty scarce in my town. there's one popular spot but... security is based on the honor principle, the walls are just pieces of plywood tacked to 2x4s climate control is non-existent, nothing is up to code, we had an exposed live wire hidden behind a chunk of plywood in one of our walls.

but the price - $150/month was awesome.... until the ceiling in our room started leaking in JANUARY and didn't get addressed until JUNE.

you have any prospects on the horizon?

That does not sound like the optimal practice facility. Price isn't too bad though.

I would love to get something going. But unfortunately I don't have my rig here in CA, it's back home at my parents house in Indiana. So I might pust buy a 2x10 combo amp or something just to jam. I really haven't met any musicians out here either. It's hard when you don't know anyone. But it's ok I just love to play.

yeah i hear ya on the hassle of finding people and a place.

i'm living in a small town right now and the local scene is rooted in high school. even people from my generation (born in the 70s) are still holding fast to the ideals they had back in the early 90s. there's a small pool of musicians and the bulk of them have been playing together since grade 9 or so it seems.

unless of course you want to play connect the dot cheese rock with a bunch of middle aged boomers who just want to play the same tired stones / led zep covers.

i count myself lucky with having 1 guy i know i can count on when it comes to doing my thing in relation to music. i have a few others who'll always say 'yes' but when push comes to shove it's clear that we're on different pages.

We've been working on covers, as well as a couple of our own songs.
We play metalcore, close to Haste the day.
Right now i play drums/back up vocals, and my friend plays lead guitar, but he wants to play keyboard, and we have another guitarist, and bass. right now we dont have a legit singer, but were looking

Sweet man, Haste The Day is pretty awesome. One of my old bands started off playing HTD coves. It's not a bad place to start. I've probably seen them live 7-8 times too.

I've always wanted to be in a band, but I can't really play an instrument and I have a terrible voice. So if anybody needs like a tambourine player or just some moral support on stage then you know where to find me. haha.

Tambourine is always good. You could always be a traditional country music background singer. I'm pretty sure the only requirement is to wear too much make-up.
