Any band that is marketed like Slipknot with their image, is going to get a bad rap amongst people, who see the marketing without really listening to the music.

Theatrics have always been part of rock and the likes of Alice Cooper and The Tubes probably did it best IMO. More recently Marilyn Manson brought it back to the forefront, and Slipknot are just carrying on that tradition and with a decent metal sound. A sound that is a damn sight better than anything put out by Nickelback, Creed, Saliva, Staind and Linkin Park etc along with all the metalcore crap out there.
It also doesn't help that there music sucks.

Well it makes sense that more well-known bands are going to be talked about. I mean most people don't go out of their way to listen to bad music.
