Nile is awesome, so I have to give you respect for liking them, but they play Death Metal with Middle Eastern progressions in it. They are influenced by Egypt's epic history and music, but they aren't "Egyptian Metal". That is overclassification

to fidelityfiend: these are all my own opinions, you can them what you will (whether or not you're right is another matter ) but to me Anthrax is Thrash, Dio is Power, Savatage as a Progressive/Thrash (depending on the record), Voivod has some Industrial leanings but I can't really pin them down and as for Clawhammer I have never heard them. I'll check them out though.

to UrbanHatemonger: I'll consider it. When I have time that is...stupid Junior Research Paper

to cardboard adolescent: I love Math and Tech and all that, but to me it's an extension of Prog. I'll definitly consider including it for version 2.

to The Overlord: It's genre's. Not sub genres. Metal is a style. Death/Thrash/Grind/Doom are all genre's. I agree that over catogorization kills it after a bit, but some basic listings helps.

to itchytasty: Animosity calls themselves "deathcore". It's a pity too, cause they're quite good.

to half_baked87:Hot Topic isn't making money of Metal. They're making money off of music that pretends to be metal.



I'm already beginning work of Version 2 which will include more history on each genre and more of the above mentioned. Look for Grind, Math, and others to be appearing

That's one sign of a useless band: making up useless genres. The only one there that works is Goregrind.



That's the "metal" part in all of the sub genres. It's just the point they're at on the metal tree that's different.


And metal isn't the place to be to make money, anyways.

Well, I'd prefer to just call it all metal, deathmetal, hard-rock,etc...
It would be good to just limit it to knowing that it's another band that plays good metal or hard-rock music, but they gotta limit it to invite people into the genres, ya know?I mean, each band is kinda placed in a certain genre so that people can focus on the type of metal that they like the most...
...After that, they can move on to more types of metal!!! That is an advantage to the band for the reason that people that like their style will "find out" about them and, therefore, buy more of their records!!!

All I really care about is listening to and purchasing good music...
...I don't care that much what the style is (going to be) called!!!Music is the best part of the band, not their style(s), ya know?

In regard to the opening post in this thread:

Black Sabbath was the first true heavy metal band. Judas Priest didn't even release their first album until 1974, and it was weak compared to what Black Sabbath had been playing since 1970.

Priest didn't even really hit the big time until they released "Stained Class" in 1978. Black Sabbath had been international superstars since 1970, thanks to their second album "Paranoid".

Wikipedia hit the nail on the head:

"Even though Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Deep Purple may have had a profound influence on the emergence of hard rock and heavy metal music, Black Sabbath is considered to be the first true heavy metal band."

Yeah, Music Man, while Sabbath had a massive influence on the style of music we collectivly call metal, I think (and many people agree with me) that they are more rock than metal. I mean, compare that album to others of the day. Then listen to Priest.

Were they heavy? Definitly
Inventive? Absolutly
Metal? Probably not.

This is my opinion, and you're welcome to disagree. Thanks for your imput however.

Whats this deal with people calling all the metal bands of the 70s 'rock' now?

I used to live next door to a biker when I was growing up,and him & his biker mates were all 'metal' fans. I asked him to give me some tapes of some metal when I was 6 or 7 years old he gave me Sabbath , Rainbow , Judas Preist , Samson , Def Leppard , Saxon and loads of others.

Just because those bands are not what you know as metal now doesn`t mean they never were.

I`d be interested to see how many old metal bands people who think of Sabbath as a 'rock' band rather than a metal band to name at least 20 bands who they would call metal from that time by todays standards.Because I know there were many more than that.
