I love Neurosis, even if I do prefer Isis. They're an absolutely groundbreaking band. The Eye of Every Storm is my favourite album of theirs. Their latest effort was good too.

I do have a few musical gaps in my collection. Neurosis and Isis are perfect examples. Best place to start then people?

I've only got Souls at Zero by Neurosis and wasn't that impressed by it. Thats all the (negative) help I can give you on that one sorry jackhammer.

Oceanic by Isis is my favourite. Fucking ripper album.

Neurosis tends to have a fairly different sound each album, and like some other post-metal bands, are rooted in hardcore. I'd say the Eye of Every Storm is the best album to start with.

As for Isis, they're easily in my top 10 bands ever. They might be a little inaccessible, and if you listen to them at face value, you'll be wondering what all the hype is about over a few chords and some grunting. But Isis is all about atmosphere and do it better than any post-rock band. I agree with Merkaba in saying that I prefer Oceanic (only just over Panopticon) as it is more primally atmospheric. Panopticon is also outstanding too, and is slightly more polished with the addition of clean vocals. So Oceanic is a good album to start with and it might require multiple listens before you appreciate the genius of it.

I think Neurosis and Isis are not really comparable, taking the whole range of the sounds in question into consideration.

Did people think much of Given To The Rising last year? I had mixed feelings. I thought it was clearly a decent record but only ended up really liking 2 or 3 of the tracks.

Hard call on Neurosis because, as mentioned earlier, they changed entirely from each album to the next. I'd recommend either Enemy Of The Sun or Pain Of Mind.

As for Isis my preference is Panopticon.

ToG is my fav, but I'd have to point anyone looking to get into Neurosis at Through Silver in Blood.

It depends with ISIs as to whether you prefer their more primal, sludgy material or their more recent atmospheric stuff. With the latter, Celestial, with the former, Oceanic.
