Ahem The Downward Spiral was one of the best albums of the 90's, sure Trent hasn't been able to match it but he's still made some good albums since

The Downward Spiral is just one soulless boring dirge after another.

Wouldn't even make my top 1000 of the 90s.

What's there to understand?

He made a half decent industrial tinged debut album then sold a load of records , shoved his head up his arse & started taking himself far too seriously.

Happens to plenty of them.

I've never been a big NIN fan.

I think, because the lack of musicianship from Trent. That guy only knows three chords, I think.

I still stick by NIN being an on-the-whole pretty mediocre act. I am not impressed at all by the new batch of releases, whether Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV or The Slip. Just why is Reznor such a cult act? What could the fascination, as far as the music goes, possibly be?

My view is that it has little to do with the actual music, and more to do with personality and the message. This is what people fall for. You often find that those obsessed with NIN are of a certain sub-cultural class within society, and this is no coincidence at all. The appeal seems to go beyond the music itself.

...not that that is particularly unusual. It seems quite common these days for certain groups within society to listen to a certain type of music not really for the music itself, but because it is associated with the latest trends within party culture or whatever. The best recent example I've seen in my city is that of minimal techno. I've actually heard people saying things like "the music, well, it's not all that - but it's not really about the music - it's all about the after parties".

I used to be a huge NIN fan a few years back... that's all I'd ever talk about. Now, I can't stand them/him or their/his fans.

You're a stuck up **** bag.

I'm glad you don't understand something as precious as NIN.

I can see why people don't enjoy Nine Inch Nails. Personally, I think they are ok. Trent does seem to take himself much too seriously a lot of the time.

And wtf at the random tool argument?
