Exactly my point!
Saying Eluveitie is a bad viking metal band is completely wrong because viking metal is a sub-genre of power metal and Eluveitie is celtic folk/melodeath.

Amon Amarth, however, are the finest viking metal band around. Very good with their lyrics and mythology. Riffs get re-used every now and then but still they are a solid band.

They are a very good band. I am yet to get their new album and have only listened to one song from it, mainly to save the pleasure of listening to the entire album when I have the actual album.

From their latest album Surtur Rising:

From their Fate of Norms album:

"Viking Metal" is not a genre. It does not describe the music at all; at best, it describes a broad range of lyrical themes, symbols employed by the band, and otherwise how the band presents the music. It has little to do with the actual music itself.

Viking Metal is essentially a theme about Vikings.
I might be wrong there but as I understand it, the term became popular when Amon Amarth came into being.

Melodic death is probably one my favorite subgenre of metal, altough my biggest preferece are bands the like of Tool and Opeth. I tend to be more inte heavy bass lines that lenghty guitar solos.
my recommendations are more or less the same as most, at the gates, amon amarth, dimension zero if you like inflames, and there's a small swedish band called Degradead that in my opinion play excellent melodic death metal.

If Amon Amarth is not considered Viking Metal than there is no Viking Metal. They just attack the genre from a death metal slant. If you prefer a black metal twist, there's the great Moonsorrow.

viking death metal SHOULD be called by the proper term pagan metal, and no one mentioned the originators enslaved OR bathorys later works.

Viking metal sits somewhere between black metal and melodic death metal with some power metal metal thrown in (Manowar Style) Bathory (Quorthon) were The Viking Metal band.
