Sweden has definitely become AOR central over the last decade. All good bands above, but you can't forget Eclipse.

Absolutely. There's a spectrum of course, but most of the bands leading the AOR pack today like H.E.A.T, Eclipse and Work Of Art are heavier than their 80's predecessors. A few more examples-

Most are probably less breakneck than power metal (no hammering drums for instance) and use more keyboards and choruses and hooks, but yeah, other than that, as Ant says, not a huge difference. Listening to Praying Mantis and these days they're AOR as hell... in a very very good way.
