Bill Ward cited Slipknot as a 'favorite' band on That Metal Show.

I think Pantera deserves a special nod in this thread. It's not so much that they are literally the worst metal band ever (though they certainly aren't very good), it's the absolutely rabid fanbase that they have which I find completely at odds with how mediocre the band is.

Wow... Really? So you refuse to acknowledge any of Pantera's positive achievements as a metal band?

Plus I've never liked it when bands get a bad name just because of how their fans act. The music is sloppy and rowdy, you can't really expect the fans to be any different. As for the amount of fans for them being 'mediocre', they have a cult following. I guess that's what happens when you convince enough people that you're the baddest mofo's on the planet.

I've always found Pantera quite enjoyable, given the right mood.

What positive achievements? You mean like when they stopped sounding like glam metal?

Maybe I should clarify: I dislike Pantera regardless of their fans. I've always found them uninteresting and middle-of-the-road and sometimes I think that's actually worse than being flat-out bad. Now, because they're such a humdrum band, I probably wouldn't take much notice of them, except that their fans are so insistent that they are one of the gods of the metal pantheon. That's where it gets annoying.

You'll note that I never said I disliked their fans for being rowdy, what I said is they are rabid. Rowdy fans are fine and fun people, good to party with, not a turnoff. Rabid fans are people who think their beloved band is the greatest thing in the universe. That's not a bad thing necessarily, but when they're claiming a band as dull as Pantera is some great piece of the heavy metal puzzle it's kind of tiring.

Oh, I agree completely. When looking at their fanbase it reminds me of something relevant to justin bieber.

Dimebag Darrell's guitar style and tone were very distinctive and influential on the metal genre. And that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge about them.

I don't think his style was all that unique or particularly influential on metal in general.

You also have to think about his tone. His dry guitar sound is pretty much the "standard" stock metal sound you hear and I was sure he developed it. But I don't really know, I'm arguing for a band I've never even listened to.
