Nothing against STP, I find Scott Weiland to be a great frontman, drug issues aside, but I've always held the belief that STP as a band just didn't live up to what Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, AIC, or Nirvana were doing at the time. Some of their songs just seem like a pantomime of grunge to me.

Nirvana and Alice In Chains are both great. they were the best bands of the genre imo.

STP's sound changed later on from their debut, especially in the late 90s. They experimented and expanded musically, a lot more than the other bands of the grunge era in my opinion, and seemed to be a more, mainstream orientated band than the others as well.

Their sound and style changed from the debut release of "Core" in 1992, when compared to their style and sound with the release of the album "No.4" in 2000.

Scott Weiland is one of my favorite artist/songwriters originally of the grunge era. "Maybe the fact of being from California had something to do with them being a little different (pantomime) than the other grunge bands from Seattle".

It just felt like they were kind of riding the coattails of what Nirvana and Soundgarden were doing initially in their career. Purple is when they really came into their own for me. Some seriously good tracks on that one.

I actually like STP's music more than any of the grunge bands from Seattle personally. STP's style sounded more Heavy Metal to me, where on the other hand Alice In Chains is my favorite (grunge band) out of Seattle. STP I agree, stood out a little from the Seattle bands for some odd reason. I agree with you also, that Purple was a good album.

I might mention "Velvet Revolver", for the sake of not having a lengthy verbal argument with Soldier!

Default Nirvana
I am more a classic rock man myself as I have been a photographer for 46 years, but Nirvana was beyond impressive! They were something new that I had never seen before.

I really can't believe Soundgarden got only 2 votes. That is disheartening. I love all these bands but Chris Cornell had and still has one of the greatest voices in rock music not to mention Soundgarden played some of the heaviest riffs since Sabbath. Guess it's just the metal in me.
