Best/worst live bands (you've seen)

Naturally I wish I was old enough to have seen Layne when he was with the band but William was pretty good. They played a great combo of old and new songs and the audience was really involved which was cool. The only problem I had with their set was that something about their sound set up was off. The guitars were overpowering William's voice on about half the songs. I could tell it wasn't William lacking power in his voice because on classic songs like Dirt and Man in the Box they came through just fine. The set was at Verizon Wireless in Indy which isn't great for sound so it could have been that or just a shoddy job by the road crew. I'd def see them again though, preferably in an indoor setting. If you haven't had a chance to see them you def should next chance you get.

I saw John McLaughlin and the Fourth Dimension last November. He's in his mid 60's, but damn he can still play. The rest of his bands was great too. They played a full 2 hours and a 15 minute encore. Without a doubt the best show I've ever been to.

Best band live for me has probably been Opeth back in 2005. Their drummer at the time (Martin Lopez) had a panic attack and flew back to Stockholm, leaving the band in Vancouver without a drummer. Long story short the band got Gene Hoglan to drum with them for a few shows and I managed to catch one of those shows. He really owned all the songs, just this big fat guy swigging beer while drumming. Plus I was underage and still got in, that was pretty cool for me.

Worst show... is sadly The Police in 2007. They had no chemistry onstage together. In fact they pretty much stood still, at least 20-30 feet apart from each other on this big stadium stage. Not only that but they turned all their songs into these long winded 9-11 minute pieces that just totally destroyed the flow. To add insult to injury, I saw Danko Jones the night before at some sweaty club in the industrial district of San Francisco and they were more fun to watch then The Police.

Alexisonfire were definitely the best live band I've seen. The worst would likely be some Christian version of The Black Eyed Peas that played at Canada's Wonderland in June called Group1Crew.

While quite a few bands are good on record but disappointing live, I remember the German band Nektar as being the reverse : they put on a great live show when I saw them at Surrey University, but the only record of theirs I bought just didn`t capture the same excitement :-

Worst: Baroness opening for Metallica, thankfully Metallica and Lamb of God were both incredible.
