Anyone else like black metal?

I met a couple of guys from England last week at the Metal fest I was at where Immortal were headlining one night and one of them described their sound as 'a fire extinguisher going off'. Classic. That's the second time in two years I have lasted around a minute into their show before walking away and taking a dump in an unhygienic portaloo.

TBH, It took me a while to get used to it. Original BM bands tried there darnest to sound as bad as possible. IT was almost a joke. I find the big difference between Death and Black Metal is the lack of low-end. Death Metal is about down-tuning and heavy complex rhythms. There's little melody. On the other hand, the crappy quality of BM recordings allowed for more atmosphere and melody, particularly in the tremolo riffing which opened up more symphonic possibilities.

This has got some gorgeous guitar tone. The composition does a great job of building and releasing tension and explores areas thrash and death metal can't go.

I am one of the most musically open minded people you could meet but the Immortal track is absolute bollocks and I don't even find it that heavy.

I give it a listen every once in a while, especially when I'm very angry. Given my usual posts in this forum, some may be surprised. Actually, a long time back a friend claimed that I actually introduced him to some Black Metal back in the 90's.

That said, I do have a number of discs in my collection, many V/A releases. One, A Tribute to Hell "Satanic Rites" actually features Naglfar, something that sparked me to purchase Diabolical (1998). That should explain when the interest started up for a while. Some Blackened collections are in my CD collection. An Immortal album, plus a couple of Mayhem discs (one live - Mediolanum Capta Est), Behemoth's Satanica, and a few other discs are around somewhere. I should hear them again during the next couple of days to know what I think about them now.

The hit and miss ratio was way too much for me to seriously keep seriously up to date, but sometimes I return to it just to hear what's been happening.

By the way, the Summoning track is great!

^ "All Shall Fail" was kinda suckie, I could never really get into, so I sold it. Picking a track off of that would be like trying to turn someone on to Metallica, then selecting something off of St. Anger.

:P but seriously it's like I always tell people, "those scandanavian guys dressed like kiss have way too many labels and subgenres to bother keeping up with"

Does "It's still rock n roll to me" - Billy Joel apply to black metal?
