Nothing wrong with sounding like another band. And As Daylight Dies is pretty excluding Arms of Sorrow obviously. Even the opening track is heavy and I could listen to it over and over again and never get tired of it.

If the band they sound like stinks, then it is a problem.

I don't find it to be a problem. Why judge a band based on the band they sound like instead of judging them on their sound separately?

You're talking to someone that thought Sepultura and Soulfly were similar (at least that is what I got out of it, I could be mistaken).

You are right though, all too often a band is judged by its genre. Unfair boundaries are put on bands, they aren't taken as a separate entity. They are lumped in with bands that are of much worse quality.

I think it is also worth pointing out that KSE's first album (with Jesse Leach) was considerably better than anything they have released afterwards

They are actually melodic metalcore, but that doesn't matter. Their lyrics are actually about self-empowerment, a common theme in hardcore and metalcore. There are a couple songs about love and death, which I suppose could classify them as "emo".

I'm not defending Howard-era KSE, however there are a considerable amount of melodic metalcore bands that are MUCH worse (ex: All That Remains, In This Moment, etc.). I guess I don't understand the point of this thread. It says worst/most comical/most embarrassing metal bands, so I figured it would be reserved for the ABSOLUTE worst. KSE isn't good IMO (post-Jesse Leach), but they certainly aren't the worst.

PS. Manowar definitely deserves a place in this thread

Are you saying that two bands which play the same type of music and have the same frontman/songwriter aren't similar?

Well I have no problem agreeing with that. I know you weren't pointing that toward me, but I just figured i'd give my two cents. Though, judging a band on the fact that they sound like another band isn't really fair.

Thank you for seconding Nightwish!

There's nothing wrong with writing off entire genres or subgenres; it's entirely possible that a particular style is just unappealing to some. Besides, even if you don't write off the entire genre, who doesn't become less inclined to check out a particular group once they learn it's in genre X, which you only like a handful of bands from & even these don't get much rotation....

They aren't that similar, and certainly not enough to make a simultaneous comparison to Slipknot (who is nothing like them, although possibly derivative). Sepultura is fantastic and Soulfly is far from that. I always thought they were bad, actually (including the song they did with Corey Taylor, which was terrible)

I thought it made it clear in the opening post, but hey, it's not meant to be a serious discussion really: just a light-hearted shrug and roll of the eyes at the band or bands (or artiste) who you feel least typifies metal, who, if you were trying to introduce a total noob to metal, would be the last one you would want them to see. They don't have to be terrible (I like Manowar as I said, but their image is laughable), just embarrassing and cliched.

I still think Manowar win hands down. I never said they couldn't play, or write music --- like I said, I have three or four of their albums and I saw them live on the "Into glory ride" tour in, what, '84? But their image just cries out for caricature and Simpson/Family Guy-style mocking of the metal genre.

But I love 'em, god bless 'em. Sure ye have to, they know no better...
