I think the first Soulfly album sounds a lot like the next step Sepultura could have taken after Roots. I agree that Sepultura is the better band but I really can't understand how you don't see the similarity between the two when they featured the same vocals and guitar as each other and were playing the same type of music. It not like Max Calavera went off and became a jazz pianist after Sepultura or something.

They don't have to be terrible (I like Manowar as I said, but their image is laughable), just embarrassing and cliched.
This makes sense. I still stand by all by picks so far, and I would like to add this one too:

Perhaps it is because Soulfly is so much worse I can't make a connection. I'll just give you the benefit of the doubt

So these two songs, recorded two years apart by the same guy, sound like two completely different styles of music to you? You really see no connection whatsoever here?

Yes, these are similar. But Roots is certainly an exception to Sepultura's discography with Cavalera in the band and I didn't think anyone on the Banter paid attention to their post-Cavalera releases so I wasn't even considering those (the same way people usually imply pre-Black Album when talking about Metallica). Regardless, most of Soulfly's other stuff is much more nu metally than this. If you replaced Cavalera's voice in Soulfly with that of Jonathen Davis it would be Korn (can't say that about Sepultura). Sorry that I wasn't clear.

^^they pretty much reverted to their thrash roots with "Omen"

which isn't really very good

as compared to early Sepultura, or even Sodom or Kreator, for that matter

You are right though, all too often a band is judged by its genre. Unfair boundaries are put on bands, they aren't taken as a separate entity. They are lumped in with bands that are of much worse quality.

I think it is also worth pointing out that KSE's first album (with Jesse Leach) was considerably better than anything they have released afterwards
Woah, I thought I made it clear that genre had nothing to do with my assessment that Slipknot blows when I said that, more-or-less, word for word. Reading is fundamental.

Oh my, if you can't hear similarity in Sepultura and Soulfly, such as world music influence, similar nu metal style guitar tuning and vocals/lyricism being dead ringers.... Then I guess I'm wasting my time.

Slipknot doesn't sound like Soulfly/Sepultura (who are nothing alike) but may be derivative of them? You can't have it both ways.

Corey's vocals are almost identical to Cavalera, the sounds and some styles of the musicians are similar. What else is there that they could possibly copy off of? Slipknot is Roots-era Sepultura without the talent or creativity.

Roots was different because Max liked the nu metal sound. Soulfly was an extention of Roots' sound.
