Why such controversy on Nu Metal?

Meh. That isn't the reason that nu metal bores me. Guitar solos are cool and all, but they don't seem to be a legitimate reason to not like a band.

Why would it not be a legitimate reason to not like a band? If somebody likes guitar solos so much that he can't listen a song without a guitar solo its a completely legitimate reason not to like a band that uses max 1 guitar solo per album if any.

Thing is, not all of us like guitar solos. I like maybe 5-10% of guitar solos I've heard. Problem is a) They started being used for display of technical skills rather than musical purposes, b) They started being overused.

For me the lack of guitar solos is more of a reason to LIKE Nu Metal than to dislike it.

I think guitar solos add more excitement to metal music but I definitely wouldn't say Nu Metal is a terrible genre just because it doesnt have it. What I like about Nu metal is the interesting lyrical subjects and the general dark feeling of Nu metal songs. These kind of things are present in albums like Korn's debut album for example. That album basically started the genre with its mix of grunge and hip hop with metal music.

Well, as much as I like a good guitar solo, it's only one small part of a song.

Because it just does. Pretty much all of the aesthetics of nu metal are dull and watered down versions of metal or grunge or post grunge or hip hop or whatever that just have no appeal to me.

. I almost forgot how much energy and stage presence Chino had in Adrenaline/ATF era. Deftones are the band I listen to the most ATM. And that DEFINITELY needs a pt2, but they weren't really Nu Metal in self-titled, SNW and KNY, only DA sounds kind-of Nu Metallish. That's one of the things I like about Nu Metal. The fact that its hard to precisely define it and which bands belong in it, which leads to originality and diversity so almost every Nu Metal band has a signature sound.

The Batlord - I generally don't like guitar solos myself, but if somebody REALLY likes them its normal he'd choose to listen to music with guitar solos instead of music without guitar solos. It's all about personal preference. So if somebody says that he doesn't like Nu Metal cause it lacks guitar solos I'm fine with that. Problem would be if he said that nobody should like Nu Metal because it lacks guitar solos.

Just sounds like a bunch of white guys trying to make rap sound evil. But if I had to choose one that I disliked the least it would be Slipknot.

Thats a good point there. All Nu Metal bands sound different than each other and theres a lot of variety in Nu metal in general. Though the variety in Nu Metal tends to be kinda uninteresting. I prefer Progressive Metal's variety over Nu metal's variety.

Lol, there's not much variety in nu metal at all. Most of the bands use the same exact kind of guitar on identical settings for crying out loud. It's easily one of the most predictable genres I can think of.

Well, because Nu Metal artists often combine different genres and subgenres in their music the outcome is pretty varied actually. Its just that the variety in nu metal isnt very interesting(at least for me.)
